Oh, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...You sat at one of the tables at your school dance. You looked around your side of the dance room. All colored kids dressed in their best outfits. Long skirts, stopping at the knee in all a sorted colors, with blouses tucked neatly at the waist. You glance to the other side of the room, where all the whites were. They were also dressed in their finest attire. The dance floor was filled with kids as well. It seemed to be the only place that wasn't too noticeably segregated.
"Y/n! Let's dance!" Your friend Lucille pulls you up from your seat. You smoothed down your skirt that your mother had sewed for you, just for this night.
"Okay." You smiled softly allowing her to pull you to the dance floor. You felt out of place as you danced to the song playing. Lucille giggles kicking her legs out in front of her then side to side in some sort of dance move. You had no idea what dance that was so you just nodded your head along, moving from side to side. Lucille smiled and grabbed your hand, spinning you around.
"Relax your shoulders and just feel the music." She tells you over the loud song. You nod and dance, spinning around. "There you go!" She laughs clapping as you started to get a bit into the song more. You took a step back, immediately bumping into someone.
A gasp escaped your mouth as you turned around to apologize to the person you bumped into. Lucille stopped dancing and wrapped her arms around yours. You looked into the eyes of the blue eyes stranger you had bumped into.
"I- I'm sorry." You whispered afraid of what he may do. At this point a few other people from both sides had stopped dancing to make sure nothing would happen. He flashed you a small smile and nods his head.
"No harm done, love." He winks before turns back around to his friends. Lucille pulled you off the dance floor and everyone went back to dancing.
"Oh my heavens. I thought you were a goner!" She exclaims fanning your face. You sat down grabbing a napkin to pat down the sweat that formed on your forehead.
"You thought I was a goner? I almost peed myself." You shook your head looking back to the dance floor to where he was dancing with his friend.
"You know how them white people react when us colored people make contact with them. They go crazy! Calling us niggers and stuff. Hmm his mama must have raised him right cause he didn't even seem bothered." She said taking a sip of her water. Blue eyes turned around scanning the crowd, he caught your eyes and smiled again. He nods to the door and starts to walk towards it. Did he want you to come out there? You stood up.
"Where are you going?" Lucille asks you.
"I need fresh air. I'll be back." You tell her and start to make your way outside. You looked around and saw him leaning on the building.
"Hey..." You walk over to him, a bit on defense about what he could want from you. He pushes off the wall and comes closer to you.
"I'm Niall."
"Y/n."
That was the start of a beautiful relationship that would have to go through the struggles of being of different races.
