The Marston estate was nothing short of grand, with gleaming floors and towering windows that bathed each room in light. A soft breeze drifted through the open terrace doors, stirring the air in one of the countless sitting rooms that dotted the mansion. But to Marriell, it was just another empty room in a house full of things but starved of warmth.
Marriell's parents were successful.
Her mother an executive in a luxury fashion brand, her father a high-powered attorney.
Together, they had a life of wealth and prestige, but they seemed to forget the little girl growing up in the echoing halls of their estate.
They were rarely home, and even when they were, their minds were preoccupied with work or events, leaving Marriell under the eyes of the household staff.
The nannies, tutors, and staff knew her well enough to remember her routine and her favorite meals, but their care stopped short of anything personal.
They were kind but professional, gentle but guarded, following the unspoken rule her parents had set: they were there to manage Marriell's needs, but nothing more.
This was how she'd spent most of her childhood: looked after, but not loved. Safe, but never really seen.
On Marriell's ninth birthday, her parents promised they'd be home to celebrate with her. They had even given her little hints of a surprise they were planning, so she waited eagerly all day, glancing at the clock with each passing hour. Evening came, but her parents didn't. Eventually, her nanny a quiet, gentle woman named Alma, led her to her room, where a gift box sat neatly on her bed. Tied with a silver ribbon and topped with a delicate card, it seemed too formal, too cold.
She opened it to find a diamond bracelet, glinting in the soft light. The note read, "We're so proud of you. Love, Mom & Dad." The words were hollow, barely masking the pain of their absence. She closed the box, slipping it into a drawer, unwilling to wear a reminder of another broken promise. Her heart felt like it was hollowing out, and she didn't understand why, only that each passing day without them chipped away a little more of her trust in the world around her.
School was Marriell's only escape from the emptiness at home, but even there, she struggled to connect. Other kids spoke of weekend trips, family dinners, and shared memories that Marriell envied quietly. She'd grown skilled at hiding her emotions, smiling politely as her classmates laughed together, but her heart sank a little each time she overheard stories of loving homes and close-knit families.
Friendships were difficult, too. She never let herself get too close to anyone. Trusting someone enough to open up felt impossible, as though she'd learned somewhere deep down that people left when they had something better to do. To keep herself from being hurt, she stayed on the sidelines, a friendly face but never anyone's first choice.
But then, everything changed the day she met Karrizma.
Marriell was fifteen, starting her second year of high school at a new school.
Marriell demanded that she went to a lower class school, she wanted to feel normal.
She fought and fought with her parents, until they gave up.
Marriell took a seat in a quiet corner, expecting to eat her lunch alone.
Then she heard a laugh—a bright, unapologetic sound that carried through the room. She looked up and spotted Karrizma, who stood out with an effortless confidence. She was chatting with a few friends, her face alight with laughter and a warmth that made her seem almost magnetic.
To Marriell's surprise, Karrizma glanced her way, and with a small smile, she crossed the room and sat beside her.
"Hey," Karrizma greeted, her voice easy and casual. "Why're you over here alone?"
Marriell shrugged, not quite sure what to say. No one had ever asked her that before. She was used to people passing by, not stopping to ask questions.
"Well," Karrizma said with a grin, "you don't have to be. Come sit with me and my friends."
In the weeks that followed, Karrizma became a constant presence in Marriell's life, and for the first time, Marriell felt like she could relax. Karrizma's world was.. mysterious. Mariell loved that.
Her warmth was like sunlight, filling the cold, empty places Marriell had hidden away. As their friendship deepened, Marriell felt the stirrings of something more.
A feeling she couldn't quite define but knew was important.
Karrizma trusted her, too. One evening, at a sleepover, Karrizma opened up about her DID. She explained that she had different personalities.
Other parts of herself that had helped her survive her own struggles. Marriell listened, hanging on every word, feeling an immense protectiveness toward Karrizma.
She wanted to be the one person who would stay, who wouldn't judge or pull away.
With Karrizma, Marriell found herself growing attached in ways that made her feel vulnerable.
But that vulnerability also terrified her. Losing Karrizma now would be like ripping out the part of her heart that had only just begun to heal.
The thought haunted her every time Karrizma made new friends or got close to someone else.
When Leeanna entered their lives, Marriell felt the familiar pang of jealousy, though it was sharper than before.
She told herself she was overreacting, that Karrizma deserved friends and happiness. But her heart ached at the thought of being pushed aside.
She clung tightly, trying to ignore the small voice that whispered she'd lose Karrizma too.
Karrizma was more than just a friend; she was the family Marriell had always wanted. She was the warmth, love, and stability that Marriell had longed for in her empty home. And so Marriell vowed to stay by her side, no matter the cost. She wouldn't let Karrizma disappear... not like everyone else had.
For the first time, Marriell felt alive. And she was determined to hold onto it, even as she grappled with her own fears, insecurities, and a love that was just as painful as it was beautiful.
