The Airbnb was quiet, way too quiet. The type of quiet that made my thoughts way louder than they needed to be.

I sat on the edge of the couch, scrolling mindlessly on my phone, but my brain wasn't processing a single thing on the screen. Marri was in the kitchen, fixing herself a glass of water, her movements slower than usual. Like her mind was on something heavy. I already knew what.

The gig had gone smooth, professionally, at least. Business was business. But seeing Karrizma again? Seeing her and Tay standing there, successful, running things? That was something neither of us had prepared for.

Marri had played it off well, kept it cool, kept it cordial. But I saw the shift in her eyes the moment she realized whose brand it was. That unspoken tension had lingered in the air the entire time, like a thick fog we couldn't see past. And now, in the aftermath, it was still sitting here with us in this Airbnb, stretching itself out across the room.

A buzz from Marri's phone broke the silence. She picked it up from the counter, glanced at the screen, and sighed. She stared at it for a moment before flipping it over. Ignoring it.

I raised an eyebrow. "Who's that?"

She hesitated, then sat down across from me, her water untouched. "Karri."

I leaned back. "Oh." That was all I said, but we both knew what that 'oh' meant.

Marri ran a hand through her hair, exhaling. "I don't know what she wants."

"Probably to talk," I said, watching her closely. "You gonna answer?"

She shrugged, but the way she kept looking at the phone told me she was thinking about it.
