Hyacinthus returned to Sparta with Crocus and Smilax in tow. Amyclas was happy to receive his son back and had some news for him. While Hyacinthus had been away, many things had happened. Betrothals had been arranged for Argalus and Cynortas to local young women of high status. However, these weddings would not take place until Amyclas himself was wed.

People had been trying to compel King Amyclas to marry again the moment the late Queen Diomede's corpse had grown cold. But they had all been rebuffed. Amyclas had needed a long break after his first marriage. He would have stayed unmarried until his death if it had been up to him. He had four healthy sons; there was no need for a bride.

However, Amyclas received an offer he could not refuse—one from a god. Ares, the god of war, had a demigod daughter in Laconia. Her name was Aristodamia, and she was quite beautiful. Amyclas had accepted her as a bride, and she had arrived in the palace to prepare for her role as queen.

Not wanting to deal with a second Diomede, Hyacinthus was polite and kind to her when introduced. He even introduced her to his friends, Crocus and Smilax.

Aristodamia was happy enough to greet him and even Crocus. But when she caught sight of Smilax, her smile fell.

"Aren't you quite beautiful?" She told Smilax, teeth bared.

"A daughter of Aphrodite?" Being a demigod, she did not mistake Smilax for a nymph or pretend to do so, as a regular mortal would.

"I attended camp myself a few years back. I met a few of your sisters."

Smilax gave the future queen a sweet smile that immediately alerted Hyacinthus. He knew his friend. That was the smile she gave enemies when assessing them and wanting to downplay her threat level.

"I hope you had a better time at camp than we did, my lady," Smilax told Aristodamia sweetly.

The king's betrothed smiled insincerely before turning to Hyacinthus.

"Your father, the king, decided to postpone our wedding for a few weeks because he wants to hold a celebration for your thirteenth birthday first."

Hyacinthus frowned. It was not quite necessary to do that. It was the fifteenth birthday when he would finally be considered a man by Spartan law that mattered.

"I will talk to him about that. The king's wedding needs to be a priority. And the eldest and second eldest princes weddings too. This is just my thirteenth, not the fifteenth."

Aristodamia looked at him up and down and licked her lips as she focused on his face.

"Ah, yes. In two years, you will be a man." She told him in a throaty voice with a languid smile.

Hyacinthus barely repressed the urge to step away from her. He looked at his friends. Crocus had an expression of disgust on his face—the same one he had when someone commented about Hyacinthus's looks. Smilax had the same pleasant expression, but her eyes were blazing with wrathful fire.
