Once darkness fell and the sky turned pitch black, void of any stars, Jessica and the rest of her newly made friend group found themselves rushing through the woods after Dustin Henderson.

The younger boy held his trusty compass, which at the moment, was pointing in several different directions all at once due to a much stronger electromagnetic field being present in Hawkins. More specifically, a new gate to the Upside Down. It tugged at the needle resting inside his compass, leading them to where the gate was. Or at least, where they hoped it was. The goal was to find it first, and then they planned on using it to find Vecna in the other dimension.

"Something's happening," Dustin called out, running faster while the others tried to keep up with him.

Jess kept at an equal pace next to Robin, knowing she could go faster than the taller girl, but choosing not to so that she would remain by her side and be there to catch her if she fell from her terrible coordination.

She was grateful that Nancy happened to bring along the bag of clothes that Jess had packed when Mrs. Wheeler stopped by her house before the funeral. Now, she was wearing a red quarter-zip pullover sweatshirt and high-waisted light-washed jeans. It felt nice being in clean clothes and wearing sneakers instead of heels. In a way, it was as if she could think more clearly, like removing her dirty clothes from the day prior also removed the pain and exhaustion that came with it.

And when Robin tied her shoes and cleaned up the cuts on her legs while the cheerleader fixed her hair before they left, Jess truly felt like she was being taken care of. She hadn't felt it from anyone except her brother, and it warmed her heart despite the eerie shivers on her spine.

She was still fearful of her fate now that it seemed to lie in Vecna's hands, and not knowing when exactly he'd strike filled her with a sense of doom and anxiety that rested like a weight in the middle of her chest.

However, having Robin at her side made her feel so much safer. Even as they dashed through the woods at night with the taller girl barely managing to keep standing along the way, she still felt a sense of protection just by being by her side.

"Watch your step, big guy," Eddie suddenly grabbed Dustin after the younger boy almost fell into the lake, too distracted with looking down at his compass to notice the large body of water.

The group had finally made it through to the other side of the woods where an opening in the trees led to the familiar sight of Lover's Lake.

"This is confounding," Dustin noted, gazing at the open water with the rest of his friends.

"There's a gate in Lover's Lake?" Max questioned, looking toward Nancy when the older girl quickly spoke after her.

"Whenever the Demogorgon attacked, it always left an opening. Maybe Vecna's the same way."
