Chapter 3

I woke up to the sound of silence. Empty, yet warm and inviting. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. When my vision cleared, I noticed that no one was here, or, at least, not in the room. Where were they? And how did I end up on a couch? It was a different one from the one on the other end of the platform. Optimus probably brought it when he and the others returned. Ratchet probably put me on it. It seemed like he liked me already. That, or his medical instincts kicked in. Either way, I was happy that he was caring for me.

Suddenly, something on the computers started beeping. I looked at the monitors curiously. A call from the Nemesis? Why would someone from the Decepticon warship be calling? Not for anything good, I'm sure. It's not like they wanted to make plans with the Autobots to go somewhere and hang out for the weekend. I'm pretty sure they weren't on friendly terms. Not to mention that they had my mother. Wait...My mother!

"Ratchet! Optimus!" I screamed. Two sets of feet came running down the hall.

"What is it? What's the matter?" Ratchet asked frantically.

"Someone's calling from the Nemesis," I informed them. Ratchet gasped as he noticed the beeping and he and Optimus ran over to the computer. After a couple of button were pushed, what I can only assume was the face of Megatron appeared on the screen.

"Hello, Prime."

"Megatron...," Optimus said cautiously.

"I am sure that you have come to the realization of something by now," he smiled evilly.

"Return the human to her home," Optimus demanded.

"Oh, but you see, you have something I want. I propose a trade."

"State your terms."

"The human girl in exchange for the older female."

"Never!"

Laughter. "I thought you might say that. I suppose the female won't mind taking a plunge to the ground from the Nemesis, then."

"Why do you want the girl?"

"You would know if you bothered checking her educational records, Optimus. Perfect grades in biology and technology. It just so happens that we are temporarily without a medic due to your last visit."

"Knockout was not offlined."

"You are correct. But we need a medic until then. And when he does become functional again, he shall require an assistant. Breakdown was offlined. You have two hours to make your decision. I will call again at that time." The screen went blank.

"What are we going to do?" Ratchet asked. "We can't just hand Jessica over. We'd be in the same situation again except for there will be nothing they want."

"You are correct. We cannot and will not hand Jessica over. However, it seems we will require her when we make an attempt to rescue her mother."

"We're going to storm the ship?"

"I fear it is our only option."

My guardian sighed. He probably wasn't happy that it hadn't even been twenty-four hours since he was given the assignment to be my guardian and already I was going to be taken aboard the Decepticon ship as...what? Bait? Not exactly but it was close enough.

I looked at Ratchet fearfully. I didn't want to be taken anywhere near that ship. From what everyone says, the Decepticons weren't anyone to be playing around with. They were evil and designed to kill.

He noticed my fear and immediately his face softened. "It will be...alright." He wasn't used to caring for a human, but it was a good start.

"You're not gonna let them get me, are you?"

"I will do everything in my power to make sure you do not fall into Decepticon hands. I'd accompany you on the ship if I could."

"Why can't you?"

"If it is a medic the Decepticons require, it would be foolish for Ratchet to accompany us on this mission," Optimus explained. "That is a risk we cannot take."

"Oh. Alright. I understand. But...what if something goes wrong and they end up taking me?"

"I cannot guarantee your safety on this mission, but it is a risk that we must take in order to rescue your mother. Ratchet, I will let you spend time with your charge. I will wake the others and inform them of the situation and plan." The Prime walked away. If he was worried about what might happen, he didn't show it.

I looked up to Ratchet, whose worry was clearly evident.

"Jessica, I...I don't know what to say. I feel as though I've already failed in protecting you."

"None of this is your fault. This was going to end up happening whether I had a guardian or not. It wouldn't even matter who it was if I had one."

"All the others are able to go and ensure your safety."

"Yes, Ratchet, but they aren't you. I wanted you to be my guardian. It was for a good reason. Do you understand the reason."

"Yes, but-"

"No buts, Ratchet. I'm going to be fine. Even if the Decepticons do end up getting me, they want me to heal them. I'm pretty sure they'll be nice since they want something."

"Jessica, you do not understand the Decepticons. They will do whatever it takes, harmful or otherwise, to get what they want. They don't play nice. If they threaten to hurt you, do whatever they want. I won't be able to recharge if I hear that you are injured."

"I'll keep myself safe. I promise. I won't do anything dangerous."

"That is all I ask."

All the other bots walked into the room.

"Are we ready to make contact?" Optimus asked. What he meant was "Are you ready to let us take her onto the Decepticons' turf?"

"As ready as we'll ever be," Ratchet replied. He gave me a sad look before he contacted the Nemesis.

A couple of moments later, Megatron's face appeared on the screen.

"I assume you've made your decision?"

"We will bring the girl to you, Megatron. Land the Nemesis at the coordinates that I will provide. Make sure that you bring her mother. Jessica will not be handed over until her mother is in our hands."

"I don't believe you, Prime. That is why we will make the trade at the same time."

"Fair enough. It will just be you and I there when we make the trade."

Megatron voiced his agreement and said that the Nemesis would be landing shortly.

Ratchetcut the connection.
