Third Person's POV
Heavy months had slipped by since the fateful accident claimed Cally's life, leaving a void in Macey's heart. As she lay in the stark confines of her hospital room, Macey slowly opened her eyes. A sharp pang shot through her head, making her wince as she tried to gather her bearings.
"Where am I?" She wondered, her thoughts muddled and slow.
The sterile scent of antiseptic mixed with the faint beeping of machines confirmed her worst fear-a hospital room.
As fragments of memories crashed back like waves, Macey felt her heart tighten painfully in her chest. She recalled the horror of the accident, the terrible screech of tires that had shattered the stillness, and the harrowing image of Cally's desperate grab for her just before it all fell apart.
Cally.
Macey's heart sank further, a heavy brick of guilt and grief lodging itself in her throat. Tears brimmed in her eyes as she painfully scanned the empty room, her hope diminishing with every passing moment.
No Cally. No bright laughter. No comforting presence. No family to bridge the gap of loss.
Her gaze fell upon a piece of paper on the bedside table, an anchor in the sea of her despair. It bore Cally's unmistakable handwriting, a bittersweet reminder of the bond they had shared. With trembling fingers, Macey reached for the letter, her heart racing as she unfolded it.
"My dearest Macey..."
Each word felt a pang in her heart, and as she read on, tears streamed down her face, blurring the ink as she fought to absorb every sentiment.
"... I know it may sound weird to you, but I'm not kidding about this day that happened twice. I saw you die twice in my arms. I just want to say sorry for what I'm going to do. I tried to save you, but it didn't work out the way I had hoped. Now, it's my second chance to save you. I love you, Macey, and I can't imagine a life without you."
Macey clutched the letter tightly as Cally's words enveloped her like a warm hug, yet they also ignited confusion and anger within her.
"I'd rather die with you than live without you, but that won't work. To save someone who's destined to die, I need to do something unexpected. Something that didn't happen before-that's the only way I can save you. And that thing is replacing you. I'll die instead of you. It was like you have to kill someone or you die."
Macey's heart raced, a tumult of emotions churning inside her as the implications of Cally's words sank in.
"I know you'll be angry with me and this sounds crazy, but let's meet in another universe. Let's find each other again. I'll wait for you, and please wait for me. I still believe that will happen. We'll be together again. It may not be here, but in another life, in another universe. I love you very much, Macey. Please live and take care of yourself. Until we see each other once more."
As Macey concluded, a wave of anguish washed over her, but it swiftly transformed into a burning determination. Cally had risked everything, and now it was her turn to honor that sacrifice.
She would live.
With newfound resolve pulsing through her veins, Macey crumpled the letter in her hands, pressing it against her heart like a cherished memory that she could never let go of.
"Cally, I promise," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I'll live. I'll love you forever."
Something shifted within her. She felt a sense of purpose. After a year, she began writing, pouring her heart onto the pages.
