I run as fast as I can out of Lucas's house. His father's words echo in my head. I don't want you to come close to my son ever again. He can do a million times better than you. You're a stupid, selfish brat. I run to the end of his drive way when I hear his voice. "Maya! Maya wait!" He calls, making me stop. He catches up to me, wrapping me in a huge hug. I push away with all my strength. "No Lucas, stop." I say. He used to be my light house in the middle of the ocean, but now it's like a tidal wave came and washed its comfort away. He looks hurt and he says, "What?" I swallow hard. "You heard me, just stop."
I turn away, but he grabs my wrist. "What? Maya I need an explanation. Was it something I said, or something I did?" I look directly in his green eyes. "It's what you didn't say. What you didn't put a stop to." "What are you talking about?" "In there. You didn't do anything to stop him. You just sat there, and watched him. You never once said stop, or defend me. What kind of boyfriend doesn't stick up for his girlfriend?" "Maya I couldn't do anything! I can't talk back to my dad. He'd disown me." "So? You think my father didn't disown me? You just don't know what its like not to be loved. For your own father to hate you, and next your boyfriends father to hate you!" "It's not his fault! He just wants the best for me!" "Then maybe you need someone who is better for you!" "Maybe I do! Maybe I was tired of your 'poor me' act!" "Then we're over! Clearly you can't love someone like me! You need your own perfect little girlfriend to fit your perfect little life!" "You're absolutely right! This is over!" "I never want to see you or your perfect little family again!" "Good! Then get out of here!"
I turn away, and this time he lets me. I run as fast and as far as I can, not bothering to look where I'm going. How could I have ever thought I could be with someone like him? It was just too good to be true. My dad was right. I'll never be with someone good. Why does my life always have to be a tragedy? Why can't I finally have a good thing happen to me? Why does the universe hate me?!
SMACK!!!
I fall to the ground, not knowing what I ran into. "Woah, careful there. Hey are you okay?" I look up to see a beautiful boy standing above me. He has surfer style dark brown hair and eyes. I can see his muscles through his black t shirt. His jeans are a dark blue, and he has black converse with a black beanie. A gorgeous face, one that's about sixteen or seventeen. I recognize him, but from where I don't know.
"Um yeah, I'm fine." I say, taking his extended hand. "You sure? You look like you've been crying. Here, you can tell me about it over a coffee." For whatever reason, I trust him. I want to tell him about Lucas, but I hate coffee. "Thanks, but I don't drink coffee." "Hot chocolate?" "Sure." He smiles his teeth are a blinding white. His breath is a minty fresh, and he says, "Perfect. There's a cute little cafe down the street." I put my trust in him, and I walk with him. "My name's Josh by the way. And you are?" "Maya." "Maya? Have we met before? I feel like I know you somehow." He can feel it too. "Me too." "Hmm." Is all he says.
We talk over his coffee and my hot cocoa. He's so funny, so perfect. Maybe it was fate that brought us together. And with him, I forget all about the hurting, and I forget all about Lucas. He walks me home, and before I fall asleep, I hope I can see him again.
