Brielle sat down on the carpeted floor in her room. Ella sat across from the young girl.
"So, what did he say?" Ella asked. Brielle had called her best friend about the fight she and Greg had. Ella had showed up at Brielle's house unexpectedly to spend the night.
It's a good thing Brielle had left the group meeting early.
"He basically said that everyone thinks Brett Young and I are dating. And he told me I couldn't let Brett call me Brie." Brielle said, taking a sip of her Coke. Ella crinkled her nose. She was a Pepsi fan herself.
"Well, I haven't heard any rumors about you and Brett being a couple. The band hears about everything. Heck, we start quite a bit as well." Ella said. She was a marvelous trombone player and spent most of her time playing. Isaac liked to joke and say that Ella loved her trombone more than him. "And, it's your nickname. If you said he can call you that, I don't see the problem." Ella continued.
"I figured you'd say that." Brielle said. She knew her best friend would stick by her.
"It's not worth all this trouble, really. I think you and Greg need have a date night and make up." Ella finished. "Besides, it's not like you would even consider dating Brett. You're not that kind of person."
All Brielle could do was smile.
**
"Hey, Isaac." Brielle said as she walked to the cafeteria. Isaac had been standing at the door, no doubt waiting on Ella.
"Brie. How'd the tutoring thing go?" Isaac asked. Brielle frowned. Isaac was Greg's Ella. The two guys gossiped more than Ella and Brielle. Brielle figured Greg would mention it to Isaac.
"It was ok. Kinda felt bad for Brett. It's not like we have a good teacher." Brielle answered. Isaac laughed.
"I've heard that he's a nice guy, but a shitty teacher." Isaac laughed.
"He's a what?" Isaac and Brielle jumped at the sound of Ella's voice.
"He's a-a crappy teacher." Isaac corrected himself. Brielle laughed at the pair. Ella had a thing against cuss words.
"That's what I thought." Ella said. The three teens walked into the cafeteria to a terrible sight.
Greg and Brett were about to lay the smack down harder than UFC fighters. Brielle's heart sank because she knew if a fight started, she'd have to defend Greg. It'd look suspicious if she didn't.
"I'll kick your punk butt, you reject!" Greg yelled. Brielle instantly knew he had made a tremendous mistake. She knew she had to step in soon so a fight didn't break out.
Brett froze. He looked up at Greg. "What did you call me?" He spat.
Greg smirked. "You heard me." Brielle decided to step in to keep the boys from hurting each other.
"Greg!" She shrieked loudly.
Greg stopped and looked at her. "Brie, don't." Anger rose in Brett as he watched the way Greg talked to Brielle.
"No, please. Don't. It isn't worth it. He isn't worth it." Brielle said as she pushed through the crowd. The words tasted sour in her mouth. She came face-to-face with the two highly upset boys. Greg shrugged and shoved Brett. Brett glared at him and hoped Brielle intervened before he killed the boy.
"What the heck?!" Brielle screamed.
"Brie, I-"
"Get your butt outside. Now." She spat at Greg. She looked at Brett. "Stay away from us." She gave him a murderous glare that made Brett smile on the inside. He had taught her that.
Brielle walked two steps ahead of Greg as she went outside of the school. Ella and Isaac hung towards the back of the two but watched to make sure nothing too bad happened.
"So what was that about?!" Brielle yelled.
"I told him to stay away from you!" Greg yelled back. "I told him that if I ever saw y'all together again I'd kill him!"
Brielle clenched her fists. "Greg! What is wrong with you?! I'll hang out with whoever I want to! You have no control over me and my decisions!" She yelled.
"You're my girlfriend!" Greg snapped back.
"I'm your girlfriend, not your bitch." Brielle spat. "You do not own me."
Ella took a step forward, expecting the fight to reach its climax. She figured someone was about to say something they'd regret.
"Like hell I do!" Greg yelled.
That was the wrong thing to say.
Brielle reached back and, quick as a flash, punched Greg in the jaw. "Screw you." She spat. "I'm done with you and with us." Ella grabbed Brielle's wrist and pulled the angry girl away from Greg.
"You have to calm down before third period." Ella whispered in Brielle's ear. Isaac followed the two girls, wondering what had made Greg say those things.
He had never heard his best friend speak like that. Especially to a young lady like Brielle.
"Brie, he didn't mean any of that. He's just frustrated." Ella said in an attempt to calm her friend and maybe even save a relationship.
"I don't care if he meant to or not." Brielle spat.
Ella sighed. She decided to wait until the next day before trying to talk to her very upset friend. Tomorrow was Saturday so it would be easier.
"I'm going home. Have a great rest of your day." Brielle said.
Brielle saw Brett walking outside. She whistled a four note whistle to catch his attention. He turned around and followed Brielle's gaze to her car. Brett understood.
Brielle got in and drove about a block away from the school. Brett hopped in the passenger side once he caught up.
"Brie, I-"
"Don't worry about it, Brett. I broke up with him."
Brett sighed but said nothing. He knew it was best just to let Brielle calm down. She'd tell him eventually.
