It had been a long day, the night had fallen slowly as they trekked through the dense forest. The journey had been quiet, not a lot of words between them. It's what they were used to.
They had fought alongside each other, fought against each other, and now, they found themselves alone with a fire crackling between them. Damian had always kept a careful distance, both physically and emotionally. But tonight, something felt different.
"You're not going to fall asleep out here, are you?" Damian teased, a slight concern in his voice.
Respawn shrugged. "Wouldn't dream of it." He replied, trying to act nonchalant. But the night air was cold, biting at his skin even through the layers of his gear. He shivered slightly, pulling his knees to his chest for warmth.
Damian’s eyes softened for just a moment as he watched his brother struggle. Then, without a word, he reached out, his hand brushing against Respawn’s shoulder. They were in this together, and Damian hadn't forgotten that.
Respawn looked at Damian, his gaze flickering between the fire and the boy beside him. Without really knowing why, he shifted closer to Damian, his body pressing against another, the chill of the night settling into his bones.
Under the quiet of the forest, the crackle of their campfire became the only sound to break the silence. Respawn didn’t say anything as he leaned in, resting his head against Damian’s chest.
The steady heartbeat he felt beneath him was comforting, a constant rhythm against the occasional rustle of leaves. Damian’s fingers threaded through Respawn’s hair absentmindedly, but there was an undeniable care in each movement that made Respawn's eyes drifting shut.
“Don't get comfortable,” Damian murmured, though there was no real bite to it, his voice low and calm as though they weren't heirs to a legacy marked by violence.
Respawn didn't bother with a reply, choosing to hum silently instead. Here, in the middle of the woods, under a canopy of stars, the rest of the world felt miles away. The fire popped, sending sparks into the air. Respawn watched them fade into the darkness, his mind wandering.
Damian shifted slightly, pressing his hand to Respawn's back in a quiet reassurance, a promise that he wasn’t going anywhere. Respawn’s breathing slowed to match the rise and fall of Damian's chest, the warmth of Damian’s body keeping him tethered as he began to relax.
"This doesn't mean anything," Respawn mumbled, even as he rested his head on Damian's shoulder.
Damian chuckled, the sound reverberating through Respawn's body. "Of course not," he agreed, his fingers absently tracing patterns on Respawn's arm.
Neither of them needed to speak after that, the silence was enough, the trees and stars their only witnesses.
