Summary: Kara and Damian are secretly in love with each other, and though Kara is convinced nothing could break them, Damian understands just how doomed they are.

Damian Wayne prided himself on being calculated, cold-emotionally untouchable. He wasn't the type to be swept up in silly notions like romance or attachment. It was impractical, a weakness he couldn't afford. But then Kara Zor-El came crashing into his world, quite literally-plummeting from the skies with that radiant smile of hers.
It was like the universe had decided to play some sick joke on him. The moment her eyes met his, everything he thought he knew about himself dissolved into thin air. Kara's eyes weren't just blue; they sparkled like starlight, brighter than the Gotham skyline he'd grown up in. It was illogical. He didn't do feelings. Certainly not whatever this... heat in his chest every time she looked at him was.
And yet, here they were.
Kara, with all her warmth, had melted something inside of him that he hadn't even realized was frozen. She could leap into the sky, and soar among the stars, all the while he was kept tethered to the ground. He should've hated that difference. He should've pushed her away the way he did with everyone else.
But he didn't.
Kara made him feel things he didn't even have names for. Her laughter became the soundtrack of his days, her touch the only one he craved. They didn't talk about it, because, well, why would they? Damian Wayne didn't talk about feelings. Ever. But he was becoming hyper-aware of how her presence in his life had somehow made everything a little better and a whole lot worse at the same time.
Their love-if you could call it that-was reckless, idiotic. There were a million reasons why they shouldn't work. His life, his responsibilities, were etched into the grime of Gotham's streets. Her existence was light years away, among galaxies he'd never touch.
But Kara had this way of making Damian believe, for a split second, that maybe it didn't matter. Maybe they could defy all odds and make it work. He wanted to lose himself in that delusion, even if it was just for a minute.
"I love you," Kara whispered to him once, her voice so quiet it was almost drowned out by the sound of the wind. They were hidden in the shadows of a rooftop, Gotham's dim light barely illuminating her face. She leaned in, close enough that Damian could feel the warmth of her breath on his cheek.
He didn't know how to say it back. His throat tightened every time he tried. So instead, he leaned his forehead against hers, exhaling shakily, and whispered, "You're going to get us both killed."
Kara smiled that mischievous smile that drove him crazy. "You worry too much, Damian."
Maybe he did. But it wasn't without reason. Deep down, he knew this could never last. Not with the way the world worked. Not with his family, his enemies, his entire existence tying him down like chains. Not when the universe itself seemed determined to pull them apart.
But none of that mattered when they were together. When her hand slipped into his, hidden in the depths of his coat pocket as they walked side by side, unseen by the world. Those moments were everything. They were the treasure Damian guarded more fiercely than anything else in his life.
"Nothing can stop us," Kara would say with that unshakable confidence of hers, unwavering as if she could actually make it true just by saying it enough times.
Damian wanted to believe her. God, he needed to believe her. But the pit of anxiety in his stomach never quite went away. Instead of voicing his doubts, though, he just held her a little tighter. He memorized the way her fingers felt laced with his, the way her hair brushed against his skin when they were close. He lived for those fleeting moments, even though each one felt like it might be the last.
They danced an impossible dance, hands bound by duty-by the invisible lines they both knew they shouldn't cross, but did anyway. Their love was fragile, maybe even doomed, but they held onto it like it was the most precious thing in the universe.
And as their time together stretched thinner and thinner, Damian knew, deep down, that no matter how this ended-whether it was in fire or in ice-he would do it all over again. For Kara.
If the world was burning down around them, if the universe itself was collapsing, Damian Wayne would still take her hand and dance. Even if it was the last thing he ever did.
