Cassie leaned against the cold steel of Titans Tower, her hair catching the wind like strands of molten gold. The sunset flared across the sky, a fiery palette that seemed to mock their impending doom. Smoke snaked its way up from the city, carrying with it the scent of ash and despair. She inhaled deeply, letting the bitterness settle in her lungs.
"Enjoying the view of our demise?" Damian's voice cut through her thoughts, crisp and unyielding.
She turned, a wry grin spreading across her face despite the grime and exhaustion. "Always the charmer, aren’t you, Robin?"
Damian approached with his usual calculated grace, boots grinding against gravel, his cape trailing behind him like a living shadow. He stopped beside her, his green eyes cutting through the encroaching twilight. "If we’re destined for the abyss, I’d rather meet it head-on."
Without ceremony, he slid down to sit next to her, the metallic rooftop vibrating faintly under his weight. From somewhere within his suit, Damian brought out a silver flask. Cassie raised an eyebrow, her surprise poorly veiled.
"Whiskey?" she asked, incredulous.
Damian uncapped the flask, his mask hiding any hint of emotion. "Why not? If the world’s going to hell, I might as well enjoy the ride." He took a languid sip before extending it to her, his gloved hands brushing hers.
"Not sure this is regulation," she muttered, but she took it anyway. The whiskey burned, sharp and unapologetic, warming her from the inside out. She grimaced, shaking her head. "God, that’s terrible."
Damian’s lips quirked into something almost like a smile. "A fitting choice for the end of days."
The flask passed between them, the silence filling with the city’s distant chaos—sirens, screams, the low rumble of something crumbling. Cassie leaned back, tipping her head toward the bruised sky, where stars were beginning to pierce through the fading orange haze.
"You ever think about what’s next?" Her voice was softer now, weighed down by the questions she rarely dared ask. "Like... if there’s anything after all this?"
Damian’s response was a low hum, noncommittal yet thoughtful. "Probably nothing. A void, maybe. Or worse, a reboot of this nightmare. Some cosmic editor deciding to fix all the plot holes in our existence."
Cassie laughed despite herself, nudging his shoulder. "So cynical. You’d be insufferable in the afterlife."
He snorted. "Tt. As if you’d be there to find out."
The sound of her laughter echoed against the steel and glass, a fleeting warmth against the cold backdrop of their reality. Cassie tucked her knees to her chest, turning to study the boy beside her. Damian looked untouchable, yet impossibly young beneath the mask. But there was something in his posture, the way his hands gripped the flask just a little too tightly, that betrayed him.
"You don’t really think this is it, do you?" she pressed, her tone half-serious, half-teasing.
"I think," he said, his voice measured, "that hoping for more is a waste of time. But if I’m wrong, well... I suppose I’ll deal with that when I’m dead."
Cassie rolled her eyes, the motion exaggerated. "God, you’re dramatic. Remind me why I’m spending the apocalypse with you?"
"Because I’m the only one who brought drinks," Damian deadpanned, and for a moment, the tension between them dissolved into something lighter.
The whiskey was almost gone when Cassie leaned her head on his shoulder. Damian stiffened, just slightly, before settling. His warmth seeped through his suit, grounding her in a way she didn’t realize she needed.
"Thanks for being here," she murmured, her words muffled against his shoulder.
Damian hesitated, his response a long time coming. "Likewise. But if you tell anyone I said that..."
"You’ll deny it. Yeah, yeah." She smiled against the fabric of his suit. "Relax, your reputation’s safe with me."
They stayed like that for a while, two young heroes sitting side by side. The end of the world had never felt so bittersweet. Eventually, Cassie straightened, handing the empty flask back to Damian.
"Alright," she said, standing and extending a hand to him. "Enough wallowing. Let’s go punch something. Preferably something evil."
Damian took her hand and rose with effortless grace. His gaze swept over the city below, chaos reflected in his sharp green eyes. "Fine. But if we find Slade, I get the first hit."
"Deal."
Together, they leapt from the tower, diving into the chaos with reckless abandon. This was what they were made for, after all. The wind tore at their clothes, the world rushing up to meet them. And in that moment, as the city burned and the stars watched from above, they were alive.
If this was going to be their last night, they would spend it doing what they did best—fighting against it.
