take me home

The silence was loud. Like, loud.

It wasn't chaotic loudness, neither was it awkward, but it was just… weird. Seonghwa felt at ease, yet he felt uncomfortable. Hongjoong too, as the male was playing with his fingers and fidgeting as he walked to his car, a few steps in front of Seonghwa.

“Hongjoong,” Seonghwa’s voice pierced through the thick silence.

”Mhm?”

”Want to get ice cream on the way?”

Hongjoong turned to look at him in surprise, a grin taking over his face. “Sure.”

“There’s an ice cream shop a few minutes from here. I’ll drive there and we can eat in the car.” Hongjoong suggested, feeling Seonghwa close up the gap between them.

“I’ll just go wherever you go. I’m not familiar with this area. I don’t really come here.” Seonghwa shrugged his shoulders. “Plus, I trust your expensive taste in food.”

“Expensive taste?”

“The restaurant we went to had the most overpriced shit I’ve ever seen in my whole life! Your taste in food is definitely expensive!” Seonghwa laughed, shuddering at the prices.

To his surprise, Hongjoong only heaved a sigh of relief. “I thought it was just me who thought the food there was unbelievably overpriced.”

“Oh, so you did feel the same way?” Seonghwa raised an eyebrow.

“Obviously.”

Seonghwa smiled. It was nice to chat with Hongjoong like this. Lightly, with a little teasing thrown in here and there.

“KIM HONGJOONG!” a shout interrupted them as they turned around to see where the high pitched squeal had come from.

Hongjoong’s smile was wiped off his face as the woman came running towards them, the click clack of her heels sounding like their doom.

Seonghwa stepped away from Hongjoong, feeling like a deer caught in headlights. He recognised the woman. “Maddy…?” he thought, feeling Hongjoong tense up beside him.

“Hongjoong!” she shouted again. “So that’s the reason you dont want to be engaged to me?” she asked, gesturing towards Seonghwa.

Seonghwa looked up from his shoes, afraid of what she was capable of.

“Kim Hongjoong. Answer me. Is he the one you love?” Maddy asked again, softer this time. She looked angry, but scared.

“So what if he is?” Hongjoong replied. “So what if he is, Maddy? It shouldn’t matter to you. I’ve never loved you and you’ve never loved me.”

“Why are you so goddamn oblivious?!”

Maddy sighed deeply. “I’ve loved you since the day you saved me when we were younger.” She paused. ”You don’t remember me, but I remember you. That day, it was raining so heavily, I ran away after your father scolded me. I nearly got hit by a car, but you pulled me away.”

Hongjoong’s jaw dropped, the memories coming back to him now. “You were that girl…” he muttered, not knowing what to say.

He grabbed Seongwha’s hand, pulling him to his side. “I’m happy that you’re grateful that I saved you, but I’m sorry, I’m afraid your feelings are one-sided. I have never loved you and I never will, because my heart is with someone else already. He might not feel the same way yet, but I’ll keep waiting for him. What will never happen, is a possible relationship between us.”

Seonghwa looked to his side, worried.

“Hongjoong, really?” Maddy asked. When all she got was a stiff nod from Hongjoong, she turned her attention towards Seonghwa.
