Happiest Birthday to our sweet boy, Tyler Kennedy! Season 1 TK would not have believed he would make it to 30. Our boy deserves every good thing in his life right now.
*********
The week had been nothing short of chaotic. Between long shifts, late nights, and the constant demands of their jobs, TK and Carlos barely had time to catch their breath, let alone spend any meaningful time together. But Carlos had one thing keeping him going—TK's upcoming 30th birthday.
The party was already planned for Saturday. Friends, family, and their closest loved ones would gather to celebrate, but for now, Carlos wanted to make TK's actual birthday—the day itself—special in his own way, even if they both had to work. He'd kept it simple: a quiet dinner together after their shifts. But there was one thing he had planned that TK didn't know about.
On the night before TK's birthday, they both went to bed early. TK was exhausted, falling asleep almost as soon as his head hit the pillow. Carlos lay beside him for a while, watching the soft rise and fall of TK's chest, letting himself get lost in how much he loved this man. Eventually, he drifted off too, but his internal clock woke him early. He slipped out of bed quietly, determined not to waste a moment.
In the kitchen, Carlos moved quickly but carefully. He mixed pancake batter, adding a generous amount of blueberries and slicing fresh bananas. He cooked the bacon and eggs, the sizzling sound filling the air, and poured a fresh pot of coffee. The pancakes were TK's favorite—drizzled with plenty of maple syrup, just the way he loved them. Carlos smiled to himself as he carefully arranged everything on a tray, adding the final touch—a single birthday candle in the middle of the pancakes.
With the tray ready, he made his way back to their bedroom. TK was still asleep, his face relaxed in the soft morning light. Carlos set the tray down on the nightstand and leaned in, brushing a kiss across TK's forehead.
"Hey, birthday boy," he whispered softly, pressing another kiss to TK's temple, then his cheek. "Wake up."
TK groaned, burying his face deeper into the pillow. Carlos chuckled and continued his gentle assault, trailing kisses along TK's jawline until his eyes fluttered open. TK blinked, disoriented at first, but the sight of Carlos's smiling face brought a sleepy smile to his lips.
"Morning," TK mumbled, his voice rough with sleep.
"Morning," Carlos said, his tone soft and affectionate. "Happy birthday."
TK's smile widened, and he sat up slowly, still trying to shake off sleep. "Thanks." He rubbed his eyes, and when he looked back at Carlos, his gaze softened. "You're up early."
"For you," Carlos said simply. He reached for the tray and carefully placed it on TK's lap. "I made your favorite."
TK's eyes went wide as he took in the sight—pancakes dripping with maple syrup, topped with fresh blueberries and bananas, a birthday candle flickering in the middle. Bacon and eggs were arranged perfectly on the side, and there was even a steaming cup of coffee. TK felt his throat tighten, overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of it all.
"Make a wish," Carlos prompted, his voice low and gentle.
TK closed his eyes for a moment, the warmth of Carlos's presence filling him with gratitude. Please let Carlos have a closure regarding his dad's murder. When he opened them, he blew out the candle. Carlos leaned in, capturing his lips in a tender kiss. "Happy birthday," he whispered again, his forehead resting against TK's.
"Thank you," TK said, his voice thick with emotion. He looked down at the breakfast tray, then back at Carlos. "You didn't have to do all this."
"I wanted to," Carlos said, his thumb tracing gentle circles on TK's hand. "You deserve it."
TK picked up a fork and took a bite of the pancakes. They were perfect—sweet, warm, and comforting. He chewed slowly, savoring the taste, but when he looked up, his eyes were glistening with unshed tears. "Carlos... this is..." He paused, taking a deep breath. "You're incredible. Thank you for being so thoughtful."
Carlos squeezed his hand, a soft smile playing on his lips. "You're worth every bit of it. I mean it."
TK swallowed, fighting back the wave of emotions crashing over him. "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me," he said quietly. "Letting my dad drag me to Austin was probably the best decision I ever made."
Carlos's eyes softened, and he leaned in, pressing a kiss to TK's forehead. "I feel the same way," he said. "Every single day."
They sat like that for a while, talking quietly, savoring the moment. TK told Carlos stories from past birthdays, and they laughed together, the sound filling the room and pushing away every trace of exhaustion from the week before. When TK was finished with breakfast, Carlos set the tray aside and pulled him close.
"There's one more thing I wanted to say," Carlos said, his voice serious but warm. "Thank you for... for suggesting the couple's counseling. For pushing us to be stronger. I know we're both busy, and life gets crazy, but because of you, I feel like we're better. Closer."
TK felt the tears slip free this time. "I did it because I love you. Because I never want to lose this."
"You won't," Carlos promised, holding him tighter. "Not ever."
They stayed wrapped up in each other, the world outside forgotten. Carlos pressed kisses to every inch of TK's face he could reach—his forehead, his cheeks, the tip of his nose, and finally his lips. Each kiss was a reminder of their love, their strength, and the journey they'd taken together.
"Happy birthday," Carlos whispered again, their foreheads touching. "I love you more than words can say."
"I love you too," TK replied, his voice steady despite the tears. "Always."
And for a few precious moments, time stood still. It was just them—wrapped in love, laughter, and the promise of many more birthdays to come.
