Carlos had known this week was coming for months. He had watched TK go through the renewal process for his dual certification with the same focus and drive he applied to everything in his life, but now that it was here—the longest they would be apart since getting engaged—Carlos wasn't as prepared as he thought he would be.
TK, on the other hand, had been a complete menace about it for the past week.
"Babe," Carlos had chuckled as TK clung to him on the couch, wrapping himself around Carlos like an octopus. "You're acting like I'm shipping you off to war."
"It feels like you are," TK whined, nuzzling into Carlos's neck. "A whole week, babe. A week without you."
Carlos smiled, rubbing TK's back soothingly. "You're acting like we haven't spent time apart before."
"That was different," TK grumbled. "At least back then, I could still see you between shifts. Plus, we weren't married then. This is the first time I'll be in another state without you as my husband."
Carlos pulled back slightly to look at TK, a teasing glint in his eyes. "I think you just like the excuse to call me 'husband' as much as possible."
"Maybe," TK admitted with a smirk, then immediately buried his face back into Carlos's chest with a whine. "But I still don't wanna go."
Carlos sighed dramatically. "Well, I guess we could both just quit our jobs and become full-time husbands instead."
TK perked up. "Oh? I'm listening."
Carlos laughed, tipping TK's chin up to kiss him. "Go pack your bags, cariño."
The clinginess only got worse as the day of TK's flight arrived. Carlos drove him to the airport, TK's fingers laced tightly with his the entire way. The moment they reached the drop-off area, TK turned to Carlos with a pout.
"Six months of marriage, a year of engagement, and this is the longest we'll be apart," TK said dramatically.
Carlos chuckled. "I promise you, we will survive seven days."
TK hummed in doubt but leaned in for one last deep, lingering kiss before finally pulling away. "I love you."
Carlos squeezed TK's hands. "I love you too. Now go be the best damn paramedic-firefighter hybrid they've ever seen."
Once TK was in the air, Carlos sighed, already feeling the absence of him in the car.
Three hours after TK landed in Los Angeles, Carlos finally received the text he had been expecting. He had been holding off from texting first, knowing TK was probably getting settled at his hotel or diving straight into convention prep. But the moment his phone buzzed, he couldn't help the small smile that tugged at his lips.
Tyler 💞
I miss you already.Babe, it's been three hours.
Exactly. That's three hours too long. 😓
You're ridiculous.
