Tim startled awake, but wasn't really sure of why for a second. He blinked the sleep out of his eyes and sat upright, and then he heard it again. RING. He glanced over at his nightstand, trying to ignore the throb of pain he got from looking at the framed photo of lucy and him, and looked at his alarm clock. 12:30 in the morning. Who was calling him?
He reached for his phone, pulling it off of the charger and answering without even glancing at caller ID. "Hello?" he asked. He was met with a sharp breath in from the other line, before they spoke.
"Baby?" the voice came out from the other line. His jaw gaped open slightly as he registered it. It wasn't being called baby that surprised him, it was the voice on the other line. "Baby, Jake, you were supposed to come pick me up remember?" her accent was slightly different, but he knew it was Lucy. He sat up in bed quickly, trying to get a grasp of what the fuck was going on.
"I was?" he asked, sliding out of bed and pulling on yesterdays clothes that he had left in a pile beside the bed. Confused or not, Lucy needed him to come get her.
"Yeah, Jake, I'm at Zona Rosa's, I ran into some old friends."
The slight intonation in her words, and the slurring distracted him for a second. But then it clicked. Lucy had ran into people who thought she was Sava.
shit.
Her words began to click, and he knew her well enough to understand the subtext of what she was saying.
I ran into some old friends, means people from their UC stunt.
I need you to come get me.
"Shit, sorry baby, I forgot. I was going to call some friends. Should I bring them too?"
Should I call for backup?
"No," she said, quickly. "Just hurry up," she paused for a moment, and then her voice dropped to a hushed whisper. "Please, hurry," He did not need any subtext to understand the urgency of those words.
Tim's stomach dropped at the absolute fear he heard in her voice. "Alright baby, I'm coming, don't worry." He glanced around for his shoes. "Zona Rosa's, right?" He was wearing his jeans and an orange T shirt, when he remembered the tattoos he was supposed to have.
There was definitely no time to get a LAPD makeup artist to airbrush them. He tucked the phone between his jaw and collarbone, balancing it as he rushed into the closet and pulled out a dark grey hoodie. It looked Jake-ish, but not enough. He dug around for a second before he found a stupid old leather jacket from a halloween costume like 10 years ago. It would sell the look better. He pulled it on over the hoodie, and rushed to the bathroom to slick down his hair. He clicked the call onto speaker phone, waiting Lucy's reply.
"Yeah, out front," she replied. "The boys are gonna," she paused and sucked in a shaky breath as she slurred her sentence. "g-gon wait with me until you get here."
Im not going to be alone.
And judging from the sound of it, not sober
"Great, I'll say hi," Tim said as he rushed out of the bathroom, hurrying through the living room and snatching his keys off of the entry way table. Kojo shot up from his dog bed at the sound, and let out a startled bark. "I'll be right back Kojo," he said, opening and slamming the front door behind him. He rushed through the driveway and into his truck.
"I'm on my way baby," he said, his voice softer and less "Jake-like". He hoped that it would bring her even a small bit of comfort, but all he got in reply from the other end was a murmured "mhmm". Then, he heard the beep that she had hung up.
Tim clenched his jaw as he pulled out of his neighborhood and into the bustle of downtown LA. Zona Rosa's was only about 8 minutes away, and luckily the traffic was not to bad in this part of downtown. Even on a Saturday night. Still, he had an overwhelming bad feeling settled in his gut that he would not be able to get to her in time. He wove through the streets, a little bit faster than he should have, but luckily, he didn't get pulled over.
He drove into the parking lot recklessly, screeching in the way that Jake Butler would. There he saw them. About six guys standing out front of the bar, with Lucy standing in the middle of them. Her body language did not exude her usual confidence, and from the car he could not tell if she was just playing Sava Wu really well, or if she was just fucking wasted.
He parked the car quickly, and stepped out, channelling his inner asshole or whatever would make him seem like a more believable Jake Butler. "Baby," he said, stepping towards the guys. He did a quick analysis of the situation, and from his memory, he couldn't recognize a single one of the men. Fuck.
Lucy stepped out to him, and one of the men grabbed her wrist, pulling her back slightly. "You know, I heard people saying Jake Butler was dead,'' the man said, and Tim's heart dropped. How had he forgotten the crucial fact that the man he was impersonating was dead? Double fuck.
"Yeah well I'm obviously not," Tim said, forcing a laugh as if to say how ridiculous the accusation was.
The men stood still, and the beefy mexican man holding onto Lucy didn't let go. A moment passed, charged, as he waited for their reaction. He was outnumbered, and could only probably take on two or three of these guys at once. He made eye contact with Lucy, who gave him an incredulous look.
He must have deemed it an appropriate response, because he dropped Lucy's wrist and let out a chuckle. It was a deep and ugly sound, like a cat in heat, but it made the other men laugh in response. He seemed like the leader of whatever pack this was. "Well, obviously," he said.
Lucy stepped from the men, and Tim reached out a hand for her to take and steady herself. He wanted to do nothing but pull her into his arms and kiss her and promise her that she was safe, but Jake wouldn't do that.
Not to mention the fact that he and Lucy were broken up.
So he settled for wrapping an arm around her waist, pulling her in tight to him. "alright guys, thanks for keeping an eye on my lady, but I gotta bounce," the two of them turned to climb back into the car, when one of the men spoke.
"Yea, we got some catching up to do Jakey," one of them said, "we've got a lil job for u and ur old lady."
Tim swallowed, he was more interested in getting Lucy out of here safely than getting a UC assignment set up, but he was still not going to pass it up if they outright mentioned a crime in planning.
"Call me," Tim said, and it seemed to pacify the men. They dipped back into the bar, and Tim turned to Lucy.
"Thank you," she said, her voice horse and shaky.
"Are you okay?" he asked, as he helped her into the truck. She shook her head.
"They put something in my drink,"
