Reeva leaned back in the worn leather chair, the scent of the studio's old walls mingling with the sharp tang of coffee brewing in the corner. The soft hum of the recording equipment around her felt like a heartbeat, pulsing in time with her own.
She glanced at Megan, who was at the soundboard, adjusting a dial, her expression focused yet casual. It was rare to see Megan this relaxed; most of the time, the pop star radiated an energy so intense that it seemed almost otherworldly.
But today, it was just them, in their element, two women with a shared passion for music and the tangled mess of life that accompanied it.
The track they were working on was coming along beautifully, weaving a tapestry of rhythmic beats, flowing lyrics, and harmonies that sparkled like sunlit water. Reeva loved this part of the process, when the song was still alive in its potential, raw and untamed. But their laughter in between takes made the work even sweeter.
"So, Reeva," Megan said, her voice pulling Reeva out of her thoughts. "What's up with you and Jacob? You two are cute, and I see that smile."
Reeva felt her cheeks warm at the compliment, a soft pink spreading across her skin. She was good at hiding her feelings, or so she thought, but Megan always had a way of seeing past the facades. Reeva's smile grew a little wider as she ran a hand through her wavy, chestnut hair.
"Jacob?" she echoed, letting out a small laugh that was tinged with embarrassment. "He's... well, he's great, you know? Just really good to me."
Megan raised an eyebrow, the corner of her mouth lifting into a knowing smile. "Good to you? That's the understatement of the year. I mean, the way you light up when you talk about him—it's like a different Reeva."
Reeva couldn't help but smile again. Megan was right, she did change when Jacob was brought up. It was more than just a smile; it was a shift in the way her body relaxed, in the way her voice softened. He had a way of making her feel seen, even when the world seemed to have its back turned.
"Yeah," Reeva said, taking a deep breath. "He's special."
"Special, huh?" Megan teased, but her voice held a warmth that made the air around them feel softer, less electric. "That's a big word, Reeva. You better be careful with it."
Reeva rolled her eyes, but there was no bite in the gesture. Megan's playful tone had brought out the playful side of Reeva, the part that she kept buried under the weight of responsibility and expectations.
For a moment, the studio felt less like a workspace and more like a sanctuary, one where she could be vulnerable without consequence.
"Trust me, I'm careful," she said, but a playful challenge danced in her eyes.
Before Megan could respond, Reeva's phone lit up on the table, a familiar name flashing across the screen. Jacob. Her heart leapt in her chest. It was the middle of the day, and they didn't usually talk this early, but the sight of his name always managed to make her smile.
Megan noticed the way Reeva's face shifted, how her eyes lit up as she picked up the phone. "I take it that's him?"
Reeva nodded, a grin tugging at her lips. "Yeah, it's him. Let me put him on speaker."
She tapped the screen and put the phone down on the table. The room was filled with the low buzz of static before Jacob's voice, warm and familiar, spilled out of the speaker.
"Hey, babe. What's up?"
"Hey, Jacob!" Reeva said, feeling the flutter in her chest as if she hadn't heard his voice in days. "You're interrupting studio time, you know."
"Ah, I'm sorry, but I had to call," Jacob replied, his tone playful. "I've got news for you. And for Megan, too, I guess."
Megan, who had been pretending to ignore their conversation, looked up with genuine curiosity. She leaned forward, her smile knowing as she glanced at Reeva.
Reeva's heart skipped a beat. "News? What kind of news?" She couldn't help the excitement that edged her voice.
"Well," Jacob said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "I just wanted to tell you that I've got a cousin who's perfect for Megan. Like, really perfect."
Reeva laughed, the sound echoing off the walls. Megan's eyebrows shot up, and her eyes widened with interest.
"You're serious?" Megan said, looking at Reeva and then back at the phone. "Your cousin?"
"Yup," Jacob said. "His name's Naio. He's in town for a bit, and I figured why not make the introduction? What do you think, Megan?"
Megan leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful smile crossing her face. "I'm intrigued," she said, her voice light with a hint of teasing. "What's he like?"
Jacob chuckled, the sound warm and rich. "Well, he's got a good heart, a great sense of humor. He's a bit of a jokester but knows when to be serious. And he's definitely not the type to be starstruck, so I think he'll fit right in."
Reeva's heart thumped in her chest. It was true that Megan didn't always have the best luck with meeting people who understood the demands of her life. It was always a risk with someone new, especially when you were in the public eye. But Jacob's cousin sounded like the kind of guy who could handle it, someone who could make Megan smile without worrying about her status.
Megan's smile turned into a grin. "Well, in that case, set it up, Jacob. I'm curious to meet him."
"Done," Jacob said, a note of finality in his voice. "I'll text you both later. And, Reeva, I'll see you tonight?"
"Definitely," Reeva said, her voice softening. "Can't wait."
"Alright, I'll let you two get back to it," Jacob said. "Talk soon."
The line went dead, and for a moment, the studio was quiet again. Reeva glanced over at Megan, who was still staring at the phone in her hand as if she was trying to decode something. The air between them was crackling with anticipation, the way it always did before something new, before the unexpected.
"So, your boyfriend is playing matchmaker now?" Megan said, a playful note in her voice.
Reeva laughed, the sound filling the room with a warmth that lingered. "I guess so. I think he's got a good feeling about this one."
Megan raised an eyebrow, her smile mischievous. "Well, I'll have to see if he's right. But who knows? Maybe this is exactly what I needed. A little bit of fate thrown in with a touch of Jacob's matchmaking skills."
Reeva's smile softened, there was something so simple and beautiful about the idea of connections being made, of people coming into your life when you least expect it.
"I think you'll like him, Megan," Reeva said. "He's got a good heart, just like Jacob said."
Megan's eyes met Reeva's, and for a moment, it was just the two of them, standing on the brink of something new and exciting. "We'll see about that," Megan said, a smile playing at her lips. "But I'm willing to take the chance."
As the first notes of the song they were working on floated back to life, the studio seemed to hum with possibility.
