Chapter 24: The Ice Cream Adventure and the Renaming of Flankreon

---

Experiment Gone Right

The lab was still, save for the hum of machines and the soft clink of Mira's tools. The air was thick with anticipation as Mira made her final adjustments to the formula. She had worked tirelessly on her Humanizer Liquid, and Flankreon was to be the final test.

Flankreon—her creation, both a machine and something more—stood still, waiting for Mira’s signal. The metal plating on their body shimmered faintly as Mira prepared the liquid. She’d tested the formula on Marianna, her robot assistant, and it had been successful, but Flankreon was a different case entirely. She hoped the liquid would work as it had been theorized—transforming Flankreon from a machine into something more human.

Mira stepped forward, taking a deep breath. "Here goes nothing," she whispered as she applied the Humanizer Liquid to Flankreon’s form.

For a moment, nothing seemed to happen. Then, slowly, the metallic sheen of Flankreon’s body began to ripple and shift, as if their form was melting into something new. The transformation was gradual, like the change from stone to clay, but much more profound. Flankreon’s features softened, their arms and legs took on a more human-like appearance, and soon, they stood there, looking human—though still very much themselves.

Flankreon blinked and looked down at their hands. "I... I can feel it," they said, their voice a blend of curiosity and disbelief. Their eyes—now human—looked up at Mira. "Mira... is this... real?"

Mira smiled, watching in awe as Flankreon adjusted to their new form. "It’s real. You’re human now, Flankreon."

Flankreon’s eyes widened. They could feel the smoothness of their skin, the weight of their body, and the depth of their breath. For the first time, they felt like they had control over their movements. They could finally move like a human, think like a human, even speak like one.

But something felt... different. They felt a pull to something deeper, a sense of self that went beyond the duality of their previous form. They took a step forward and looked at Mira again. "But... Mira, I think... I need a new name."

The Ice Cream Break

After the transformation, Flankreon—now feeling more like a human—decided they needed some time to process it all. The excitement was overwhelming, and there was only one thing on their mind: ice cream.

With a quick glance at Mira, they smiled. "I’ll be back. I need a break."

Mira chuckled and nodded. "Take your time, Ethan. I mean, take some time for yourself."

Flankreon—still adjusting to the whole "being human" thing—left the lab and wandered through the streets of Starcove. The sun was shining brightly, and the air felt fresh, which was a pleasant surprise. It was a warm day, perfect for indulging in a sweet treat.

When Flankreon entered the ice cream shop, the young girl behind the counter glanced up at them, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Hey, you’re that new person, right? You look... different."

Flankreon smiled softly, feeling the lightness of their new body. "Yeah... I guess I do. Surprised? It’s a long story."

They ordered a wild combination of flavors, not sure exactly what they wanted but happy to indulge in something fun and sweet. The ice cream was a colorful mix of chocolate, vanilla, and mint, with sprinkles and a mini donut on top. It was over-the-top, just the way Flankreon liked it.

They took a seat at a table by the window, savoring the cold treat and basking in the calm moment. For the first time in a while, they felt at peace.

The Renaming

After finishing the ice cream, Flankreon returned to Team Vapor HQ. As they entered the main area, the team was just finishing up a mission briefing. Nica, Valore, Acre, Geo, and Austin all looked up in surprise when Flankreon stepped into the room, now fully human.

"Whoa, Flankreon, you look... different," Nica said, her eyes wide.

Vapor, who had been tinkering with a piece of equipment, looked up and blinked. "Yeah, you look... well, kinda normal."

Flankreon chuckled softly but stood tall. They felt oddly at home in their new form. "Well, that’s the idea."

Rosie smiled. "Hey, it’s good to see you, Flankreon. You feeling alright?"

For a moment, Flankreon hesitated. The name Flankreon didn’t feel like them anymore. It was a name that represented a different part of their life, a different identity. They looked around at the members of Team Vapor, their teammates who had supported them through so much, and felt a desire to make a change.

Flankreon took a deep breath and stepped forward. "Actually, I’ve been thinking," they said, their voice steady but soft. "I think... I think I need a new name. From now on, I want you to call me Ethan."

There was a brief silence as the team processed the announcement. Nica, who was always quick to speak up, broke the silence. "Ethan, huh? Okay. That actually works for you."

Vapor tilted his head, looking them over. "Ethan... yeah, that’s a good name. It suits you."

Rosie smiled warmly. "Ethan it is, then. Welcome to the team, Ethan."

The rest of the team nodded in agreement, each of them offering their support. Ethan smiled, feeling a rush of relief. It was the first time in a long while that they felt truly seen—and it was a name that reflected who they were, both inside and out.

A New Beginning

As the team settled in for the evening, planning their next mission and discussing their future projects, Ethan—feeling lighter than ever—joined them at the table. It was a new beginning, one that marked the start of a fresh chapter for them.

The journey ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: Team Vapor had become Ethan’s new family, and as they moved forward, they knew they had a place where they belonged—as Ethan, both fully human and completely themselves.
