After Brad realized you weren't going to leave — even if he ignored you — he decided he'd try a different tactic. Maybe, just maybe, if he pissed you off enough, you'd leave on your own. That had to work, right?
He leaned over in the bed just enough to make sure you could hear him clearly.
"You know, I can't believe you'd hurt me like this. Was it worth it? Getting that little sword? Cutting through all those people? Did they all deserve it? Did I deserve it? I'm stuck in this bed because of you. I hope you know that."
That stirred something inside you — a tightening in your chest, a familiar rise of heat in your throat. But you tried to brush it off, reminding yourself he was just messing with you. He didn't mean any of it... right?
But Brad saw your subtle reaction, and that was exactly what he wanted. So he kept going.
"Or wait — have you cut down people before just to get swords like this one? I bet you have. I mean, look at that shiny blue one strapped to your back. Did you kill someone for that too? Are you just so greedy that you need to collect every sword that sparkles?"
His voice was mocking, sharp and deliberate. It took a lot to get under your skin, but this — this was pushing it. The way he twisted things, the way he brought up death like it was a joke... You were only doing what you had to do — what he was supposed to do — to save Builderman.
You snapped, your tone sharper than you intended.
"I'm doing this because I need to save someone else."
Brad brought a hand dramatically to his mouth and let out a laugh.
"Ooh, someone's getting all defensive now~ I'm so scared. Please don't yell at me. I'm already hurt."
You let out a long breath and sank back down into the chair. Arguing with him wouldn't get you anywhere. It'd just encourage him to keep going. So you pulled out your phone, deciding to sit quietly and let the heart monitor's steady beeping be your focus.
Brad groaned again when you stopped reacting. It was no fun just lying in bed, listening to that machine. He glanced over and saw you playing a game on your phone — then smirked.
Without warning, he reached out and snatched the phone from your hands.
You let out a noise of protest and reached to grab it back, but he held it over himself, just out of reach. You froze. You couldn't risk leaning over too far — if he got hurt, the mayor would feel betrayed. He trusted you to protect his son. If you couldn't even do that, what was the point?
So you exhaled slowly and let him keep the phone.
"Ooh, you've got all sorts of apps on this thing, huh?" he muttered, grinning.
You huffed in annoyance.
He found some random shooter game and started playing, utterly content to waste time on it.

[Time Skip – A few hours later]
Eventually, you took your phone back, checking the time. Visiting hours were over, and the hospital was starting to close up for the night.
You stood, stretching your arms and legs. After sitting for so long, it felt good to move again. Brad looked at you for a few seconds, hesitant. His mouth opened like he wanted to say something — then closed again.
Finally, with an annoyed huff, he muttered,
"Already tired of me or something? Got your fun taunting the injured kid and now you're gonna leave me here to rot?"
The doctors had been poking and prodding at him all day, treating him like some kind of anomaly. The last thing he needed was for you to vanish, too — even if you were just there to be mocked. At least it wasn't another doctor asking weird questions.
"Yeah, yeah, don't worry too much. I'll be back tomorrow."
Brad let out an exaggerated groan, dramatically rolling his eyes.
"Ugh. I'll see you tomorrow, I guess."
Still, he had to admit — bullying someone who actually gave him a reaction? It wasn't the worst way to pass the time.
