You woke up from a surprisingly restful nap, feeling like maybe — just maybe — things were finally going to go smoothly. You hopped into your jeep, turned the key, and—
Rev-rev... clunk.
Of course. The stupid car wouldn't start.
You groaned and tried again. And again. Nothing.
Looks like you were walking today.
Luckily, the town was small, so the hospital wasn't too far. Still — annoying. Especially since you'd have to fight through that poison again. You managed pretty easily this time, sparing the local enemies since all you wanted was to make it to the hospital as quickly as possible. But one of them got bold — real bold — and you ended up rag-dolling them across the forest in a fit of frustration.
Eventually, you made it back to the hospital, pushing open the door to Brad's room just as the usual wave of sarcasm greeted you.
"Wow," Brad snorted, taking one look at you. "Looks like someone had a rough day. Did a storm catch you in its winds or something?"
You rolled your eyes. "Oh, you know. The usual — almost getting stabbed, shot with poison darts, that kind of thing."
As much as he liked to pretend he didn't care, there was concern behind his voice. That fact alone annoyed him. He scoffed, brushing it off with a smirk.
"Oh boo-hoo, cry me a river. I'm the one stuck in a hospital bed."
You sighed. Yep. It was going to be one of those days. You had to distract him somehow.
That's when an idea struck you.
"Wanna hear a story, Br— I mean, Griefer?"
Brad paused for a second, clearly considering it before rolling his eyes and grumbling, "Hit me with your best one. Don't make it boring."
So you did. You told him all about your adventure chasing down the Ghostwalker. About fighting the false Builderman. About battling the embodiment of hatred itself. The story stretched on for hours — and to your surprise, he actually listened. He never looked directly at you, of course. Every time you glanced at him, he turned away like he wasn't interested.
But you could tell he was. And that alone made it worth it.
Then your stomach growled.
Right... you hadn't eaten since this whole ordeal started. You'd been so caught up helping the mayor that food had completely slipped your mind.
Luckily, you had your inventory.
Brad's eyes followed your movements in confusion as you suddenly pulled a mango out of nowhere, like it had just blinked into existence.
You took a bite, and as you did, your wounds began to close, and the remaining poison drained from your system in moments.
Brad blinked. "What the hell—? Where did you get that from? You didn't have that in your hand a second ago."
You laughed, intentionally playing it off with something dumb. "That's a secret~ Only little brats figure out how to make things work like this." You stuck your tongue out teasingly.
He rolled his eyes. "Real mature of you. Just give me a dang mango."
Grinning, you pulled another mango from your inventory — good thing you stocked up back during the Bigfoot fight, or you'd be fresh out by now.
Brad snatched the mango from your hand. He clearly wanted to complain, but as soon as he took a bite, any possible insult died on his tongue. It was fresh. Sweet. Almost too good. The juice dripped slightly as he chewed, and he had to admit — it made his limbs feel a bit less weak.
...Maybe this whole "watching over" thing wasn't that bad.
No, no, he thought, snapping internally. Don't think like that.
This was your fault. You, the Player, were why he was here in the first place.
You beat him.
You shattered his ego.
You brought him down, and now he was stuck — healing, humiliated, and hiding it behind sarcasm.
He couldn't afford to go soft now.You glanced down at him. He'd stopped eating halfway through a bite, clearly lost in thought. His face was blank — thinking hard about something.
You leaned closer and gently tapped his cheek. "Hello? Earth to Griefer? You good? If you keep sitting there like that, you're gonna choke and look like an idiot."
That seemed to snap him out of it. He took another bite, rolling his eyes as he chewed.
"The only idiot here is you >:("
He made an exaggerated pouty face, and you couldn't help but laugh.
