The autumn air was crisp as Ethan and Grace walked along the path that wound through the park. The trees had turned into vibrant shades of orange and red, their leaves carpeting the ground in a colorful mosaic. Ethan stuffed his hands into his jacket pockets, glancing sideways at Grace as she strolled beside him.
She seemed at ease, her scarf wrapped loosely around her neck and her hands in the pocket of her sweatshirt. But Ethan wasn't. His chest felt tight, his thoughts a tangled mess as he tried to find the right words for what he needed to say.
The past few weeks had been a blur - his mom's worsening condition, his run-in with Josh, and Grace's unwavering support. And yet, through it all, one thing had become clear: Grace wasn't just a friend. She wasn't just someone who cared about him or tried to show him the good in the world.
She was more than that.
"So," Grace said, breaking the silence and his thoughts. "You've been pretty quiet today. Everything okay?"
Ethan hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ground. "Yeah. I'm fine. Just... thinking."
"About what?"
Ethan kicked at a loose rock on the path, his jaw tightening. "About you. About us."
Grace stopped walking, turning to face him. "What do you mean?"
He stopped too, his heart pounding as he forced himself to look at her. "I mean... I care about you, Grace. A lot. More than I probably should,"
Grace blinked, her cheeks flushing slightly as her eyes searched his face. "Ethan..."
"I know I'm not exactly what you deserve," Ethan continued quickly, his voice rough. "I'm not the guy who has his life together. I'm not the guy who believes in God or sees the world the way you do. But... I can't help the way I feel about you."
The words hung between them, heavy and fragile.
For a moment, Grace didn't respond, her expression unreadable. Ethan's chest tightened, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Had he ruined everything?
Finally, Grace let out a soft breath, her lips curving into a small, uncertain smile. "Ethan, you don't have to be perfect. I don't expect you to have everything figured out. I just..." She hesitated, her eyes shining as she continued. "I care about you too. More than I probably should too."
Ethan's breath caught, relief washing over him like a wave.
"But," Grace added, her voice quieter now, "this isn't just about how we fell. There's more to it than that."
Ethan frowned, his chest tightening again. "What do you mean?"
Grace glanced down, fiddling with the edge of her scarf. You're still figuring out who you are, Ethan. And I don't want you to feel like you have to change just to fit into my life. I want you to believe in God because it's something you feel, not because you think it's the only way to be with me."
Ethan's jaw tightened, his hands clenching in his pockets. "That's not what this is about, Grace. I'm not trying to fake anything. I'm just... trying to figure it out. And I want you to be part of that."
Grace's eyes softened, and she stepped closer her hand brushing against his. "I want to be part of it too. But I need you to promise me something."
"What?" Ethan asked, his voice low.
"Promise me you'll be honest with yourself," Grace said. "About what you want. About what you believe. Don't pretend for my sake, Ethan. Just... be you."
Ethan stared at her, the sincerity in her voice making his chest ache. Slowly, he nodded. "I promise."
Grace smiled faintly, her hand lingering against this for a moment longer. "Good."
They continued walking, the silence between them less heavy now, though the tension still lingered in Ethan's chest.
As they reached the edge of the park, where the path curved toward the parking lot, Grac paused again.
"I'm scared too, you know," she said softly, her gaze fixed on the horizon.
Ethan frowned, stepping closer. "Of what?"
"Of us," she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "Of what happens is this doesn't work. If we hurt each other."
Ethan hesitated, then reached out, his hand brushing against hers before taking it fully. "I can't promise we won't screw this up, Grace. But I can promise I'll try. For you."
Grace turned to him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "That's all I needed to hear."
As they stood there, their hands intertwined, the first drops of rain began to fall, soft and cool against their skin.
Grace laughed lightly, glancing up at the darkening sky. "We should probably go before we get soaked."
Ethan smiled, though his chest still felt heavy with everything left unsaid. "Yeah. Let's go."
But as they walked back to their cars, a small part of him couldn't help but wonder if he'd be enough - for there, for himself, for whatever lay ahead.
And for the first time, he allowed himself to hope that maybe, just maybe, he could be.
