Chapter 9: Bonfire

Day 2

Lee Know hyung made a plan to have a bonfire by the beach at 5:00 PM this afternoon.

Right now, we're in the kitchen preparing things to bring later. I scanned the tables and saw marshmallows, hotdogs, blankets, and a cooler filled with beers and soft drinks.

"Lee Know hyung, I'm done packing!" I shouted.

I saw Hyunjin and Lee Know hyung at the entrance of the kitchen, ready to help me carry everything to the beach. It was already 4:45 PM, so we decided to head out.

When we arrived at the beach, I was shocked to see a pile of wood ready for the fire; we just needed to light it. I carefully laid out the blankets one by one, even though there were eight of us in total. While I was setting up, I heard someone speak behind me.

"Can I help you?"

I was surprised when Hyunjin offered to help. I quickly nodded, smiled, and handed him some of the blankets. After arranging the blankets, I started getting the barbecue ready. Once I finished everything,

"Lee Know hyung," I called.

"Mmmh," he replied without turning his head.

"I'll be right back; I'm going to the cabin to change. I'll be quick," I added.

"Be quick. Oh, and I almost forgot, baby bro. I've invited some of my classmates; they're on their way right now."

"Okay, cool," was all I said.

I hurried to the cabin and went straight to my room. I decided to wear a plain black t-shirt and white board shorts.

As I was walking back to the beach, I could hear music coming from the bonfire. I didn't know Lee Know hyung had invited a DJ.

"I'm a mothafuckin' starboy."

I smiled; I think I'm going to enjoy this bonfire tonight. I greeted Lee Know hyung with a smile, and he unexpectedly handed me... Sprite.

Seriously? I said.

"No alcohol for you tonight," he immediately replied.

I quickly frowned.

I happily scanned the small crowd to see if I could find Han, Seungmin, and I.N. But then my eyes landed on an unexpected sight. My smile disappeared when I saw Hyunjin had his arm around a girl's shoulder, laughing and talking. His smile faded when our eyes met, and I quickly looked away. I walked away slowly.

I walked closer to the saltwater and quickly sat down, enjoying the soothing sound of the waves. I was halfway through sipping the can sprite I had when someone spoke behind me.

"Lixie."

"Hey, it's me, Jay," he added.

I furrowed my brow.

"Excuse me, do I know you?" I asked.

"Park Jongseong, from tenth grade."

My eyes went wide.

"Oh my god, Jay?" I exclaimed.
"Come on, sit down!" I immediately offered him space next to me.

"Oh, okay. I would love to," he smiled.

As we were in the middle of talking, I suddenly felt cold.

I shivered.

"Are you cold?" he asked.
"I'm okay. I'm fine," I laughed.
"No, no. Please wear my hoodie."

Fast forward

"I'm really glad Lee Know hyung invited you."

"W-wait, hyung?" he asked, confused.
"He's my older brother," I added.

"Really? I didn't know that," he replied, surprised.

Suddenly, he raised his hands in the air and joked, "I should probably get going; if your brother sees me hanging around you, he'll kill me!"

"Oh, shoot. Can I have your number? We can hang out next time," he added

"Yeah, sure." I gladly took his phone and typed in my number.

"There," I said and smiled at him.

"It was nice meeting you again, Lixie," he said, patting my head, and I smiled.

I hugged him before he got up. "Bye! See you soon!"
