Maxine's POV
The week that followed Damian's dinner was a storm of mixed feelings. Though Theo and I had begun the process of healing, the past hung over our heads like the leading edge of a storm.
But more than anything else, I couldn't stop thinking about the past where damian who's hurt because of theo while me i couldn't do anything for them maybe I'm too weak to fix my part.
Damian is such a great friend and listenr herr calm demeanor, her quiet strength-she was the anchor I didn't know I needed. She knew how to bring our group together, smoothing over cracks and diffusing tensions. But under that warm exterior, I knew there were scars-ones she rarely spoke of.
Damian had once been with Theo. Much, much before I had reconnected with Theo. Their story was bittersweet-to be marked with love, betrayal, and forgiveness. I only ever heard snippets of the conversations they'd had, but it was enough that those ways Theo hurt her he'd never have the right to do to Damian.
It was on a Friday evening that I decided to visit Damian at her place. The idea was lingering within my head the whole day, and by the time I reached her doorstep with a bottle of wine, I felt both determined and nervous.
Damian opened the door. She was extremely happy to see me, her face lighting up. "Maxine! This is a surprise."
"Hope it's a good one," I said with a small smile, holding up the wine.
"It's always good when you're here," she replied, stepping aside to let me in.
Her apartment was cozy, filled with the faint scent of vanilla and the soft hum of a jazz playlist. I followed her to the kitchen, where she pulled out two glasses and set them on the counter.
"What's the occasion?" she asked, pouring the wine.
I hesitated, running my fingers along the rim of my glass. "I've been thinking a lot about the past. About you and Theo."
Damian paused, her expression guarded. "What about us?"
"Yes about us." I replied.
----------------
I took a sip of my wine, collecting my thoughts. "You don't talk about it much, but I know things between you two ended. badly."
Damian let out a soft sigh, leaning against the counter. "That's putting it lightly," she said with a wry smile. "Theo and I loved each other, but love doesn't always mean things work out. We were young, reckless. And Theo... well, she made mistakes."
"She cheated on you," I said quietly, more of a statement than a question.
Damian's lips tightened, but she nodded. "She did. I found out she'd been seeing someone else behind my back. Someone I didn't even know. It wasn't just the betrayal-it was the lies, the way she shut me out when I tried to fix things."
I felt a pang of anger on Damian's behalf. "I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve that."
Damian shrugged, her eyes remote. "No, I didn't, but I did learn a lot from it. About her, about myself. It wasn't easy to forgive Theo, but I knew I couldn't keep this animosity inside me forever. It would've destroyed me."
Her words were so serene, so measured, that I almost didn't even see the flicker of pain across her eyes.
We went into the living room, plopped down on the couch with our glasses of wine. The conversation became less serious for a period of time--work, funny stories from our past--and yet, Theo sat in the back of my head.
Eventually, I turned to her and asked, "How do you feel about her now?"
Damian looked at me, her eyes solemn. "I love her. I always will and I'm trying to fix our relationship until i can, i still wanted her max.. she's only i want. Her presence are important to me. Theo is the only one I have, I will do everything to make our relationship work. my theo is the only answer to my wishes in my whole life. Yes, she betrayed me, she cheated on me and that was when we were still in college."
Her words weighed upon me like a blanket-comforting yet bittersweet.
"And you?" Damian asked, tilting her head slightly. "What do you think of Theo?
I paused, swirling the wine in my glass. "Maybe you're right theo is the one who saved you on your darkest time and i forgive her somehow but i still not forget how she cheated on you."
Damian nodded, her gaze steady. "Take your time, Max. You don't have to figure it all out right now."
Her reassurance eased some of the tension in my chest."Thank you," I said softly.
---
The night wore on, and as we laughed and talked, I realised something I hadn't really considered fully before: Damian was more than my friend, after all. She was my safe haven, my constant.
I had no idea where things were going with Theo, but I knew this: I wasn't alone in the middle of this crazy, screwed up life. Damian was there, and that was enough.
For now.
