The faint smell of grilled fish and miso soup wafted into Y/N's room as he blinked awake, sunlight filtering through the curtains.
The light knock on his door was followed by his grandfather's gruff voice.
"Y/N, get up. It's already late," Ikkei Ukai said, the warmth in his tone belying his words.
Y/N groaned softly, running a hand through his disheveled hair.
It wasn't just another day, it was Christmas.
For most people, that meant joy, family, and celebration.
For him, it was always a bittersweet reminder of what he had lost.
He threw on a sweater and shuffled downstairs, the cozy warmth of the kitchen contrasting with the chill outside.
Mayumi, his "older sister" in everything but blood, stood by the table, her hands deftly arranging plates. She turned to him with a bright smile.
"Good morning, sleepyhead. Merry Christmas!" she chirped.
Y/N muttered a quiet "Morning," sitting at the table as Ikkei placed a steaming bowl of rice in front of him.
"We've got a lot to do today," Ikkei said, settling into his chair. "But first, eat. You'll need your strength."
Y/N paused, his gaze flickering toward the window. "What do you mean?"
Mayumi grinned. "We're decorating the volleyball center! We thought it'd be nice to brighten the place up for the kids and families coming by later. And, of course, we'll celebrate up here after."
Ikkei nodded. "It's about time you felt the holiday spirit, kid. You've been moping around this time of year for too long."
...
The plates clinked softly as Mayumi cleared the table, humming a cheerful tune.
Y/N leaned back in his chair, watching as Ikkei sipped his tea with a satisfied sigh.
"Alright," Ikkei began, placing his cup down, "we have a lot of work to do. Mayumi, you'll handle the decorations. Y/N, you're in charge of setting up the equipment and helping with the tree."
Y/N arched a brow. "You want me to decorate?"
Ikkei smirked. "No, I want you to carry the heavy stuff. Leave the creative touches to Mayumi."
"Smart move," Y/N muttered, earning a laugh from Mayumi.
The trio quickly moved to the volleyball center below their home.
The space was quiet, with only the soft echoes of their footsteps bouncing off the walls.
Ikkei unlocked the doors, and a cold gust of air swept in, carrying the faint scent of snow.
...
Y/N started with the equipment, wheeling out the net posts and setting them up with practiced ease. His movements were efficient, honed from years of training.
"Not bad, Y/N," Mayumi teased as she passed by with a box of ornaments. "But can you make it look festive?"
He shot her a deadpan look. "I'm not putting lights on a volleyball net."
She laughed, shaking her head. "Fine, leave that to me."
Meanwhile, Ikkei wrestled with the massive Christmas tree they had brought in the day before.
"Y/N!" he called. "Quit standing around and give me a hand with this thing."
Y/N sighed but walked over, gripping the tree's trunk. Together, they hoisted it upright, the branches brushing against the ceiling.
