[ MARK MASA ]
"First day of work, huh?" The handsome, chiseled man, perfectly dressed in a three-piece black suit, squinted at me as if he were sizing me up, a small smile playing at the corner of his mouth as if he were mocking me.
Vee Vivis, my new boss. He scrutinized me seriously, but I had no idea what he was thinking, giving me that look. His deep, smoky gray eyes were hard to read, strict and unyielding.
"My name is Mark Masa. It's my first day on the job." I introduced myself slowly, still fixated on my new boss's handsome face, never taking my eyes off him. The man in front of me was a handsome, charismatic mix of Eastern and Western, charming, sharp, and dangerous.
"Mark," he called out in a deep voice, searching my face. "Do you know how many people have taken this position in the last three months?"
"I don't know, sir." I shook my head slightly, unsure if his question was part of some test.
"Five." Vee held up a hand to indicate the number, finishing with a mysterious , complex smile that was too difficult to interpret. "You're the sixth. I'm not sure if there'll be a seventh next." The man in front of me sighed and stood up.
He was very tall, about six feet, making me look quite small in comparison.
"But let's see how long you last here."
Was he looking down on me?
I didn't know what the others had done to displease this man, but I believed in my patience, endurance, and ability to learn quickly. If I was lucky, I might just pass the probationary period, which was my only hope. After all, I had been through several jobs, fighting with my own hands and feet throughout my life, from low-level service jobs like dishwasher and waiter to window cleaning, jobs that no one ever respected. But I had to do it in order to attend school and survive. It was a fortunate thing that I was persistent enough and that my studies were satisfactory. After graduation, one of my teachers recommended me a job with a company, but after two years I quit because of some discomfort. When a friend told me that this place was hiring, I decided to apply.
I passed the written test and the interview and got the job quickly. Now, I'm still baffled as to why I got this job so easily, especially since this company is a major construction contractor with many subsidiaries. A free-lance company wouldn't normally hire someone like me so easily, perhaps because my fierce boss wasn't involved in the interview.
When I heard that you were frequently traveling and in urgent need of a personal assistant, maybe I would have come along at the right time. With my luck, this new job meant a more stable and promising future for me.
"What's is the agenda for today?"
"This morning we have a meeting about a new project for which we have won the main construction bid. In the afternoon, you have an appointment with Mr. Kitti regarding the contract for the new project. In the evening, there is a party with Mrs. Ploythiwa at the condo." I gave him the exact details, surprised by the name of Ploythiwa, the actress who was a daily scandal in the news. She was known as a master manipulator that everyone was talking about. But this time, I wasn't sure who would play whom between Vee and Ploythiwa, as my boss also had a reputation for being quite the womanizer.
"Get a gift for her too."
"What should it be, sir?" I asked hesitantly.
"Figure it out. It's your job to find those silly things Anything that a woman would be happy with." Vee replied in an annoyed tone. Was he always this irritable when things didn't go his way? No wonder he changed assistants so often.
"How much should I blow out of the budget?"
Vee frowned and thought for a moment. "...Maybe a hundred thousand, I don't know. I've never kept track of how much the previous secretaries spent."
Hearing this, I was surprised. I didn't expect such an amount to be spent so carelessly. That amount could cover my own expenses for a year.
"Understood, sir. I'll take care of it quickly." I wrote down the message quickly, determined to please him.
From that day on, I was responsible for getting gifts for the ladies, along with everything else in his daily life. From clothes, to food, to even her love life, almost everything in Elis' life came under my management.
After getting through the first week of work, everything started to fall into place. I realized that Vee was an ordinary man. He was lonely, he was hungry, and he had fun. This man took his job very seriously. He hated mistakes, and I was determined not to let any happen.
When Vee was with someone, he was a generous lover and he lavished them with no restraint. But as time went on, I heard a hint in a wordnthat meant to push them away. The word was... Inconvenient. The secret code he used to get me to 'eliminate' his dates from my routine. My main duty as his close assistant was to banish such people as far away from Vee as possible. Many times, these women would insult me, but I didn't care.
I didn't know when I fell in love with Vee. Before I knew it, every breath I took was filled with him, his name, his deep voice, and his unique scent. Everything about Vee was always affectionate for my reason.
But those dangerous feelings were kept firmly hidden, never to be discovered.... Our positions were clear. Vee was the boss and I was just an employee. Love for the boss was impossible... I knew it well.
