Grace sat on the porch of the chateau-style beach house she had been crashing at with the Pogues. The moon hung low over the horizon, its pale light reflecting off the ocean, giving the world an ethereal glow. Grace couldn't help but feel a sense of peace when she looked out over the water, but deep down, she knew that peace was fleeting.
Her interactions with the boys had become more intense, and her time with Sarah and Kiara had become strained. Grace wanted to stay out of the drama, but it felt like she was being dragged in, no matter how hard she tried to keep things light.
John B. came over and sat beside her. He had that signature grin on his face, but tonight, it wasn't quite as bright as usual.
"You okay?" he asked, his voice soft.
Grace smiled faintly. "Yeah, just thinking. About everything. About... all of this."
"You don't have to pretend like you have it all figured out," John B. said. "None of us do. We're just trying to get through it, you know?"
Grace nodded, feeling the weight of his words. She appreciated the simplicity of the sentiment. *Get through it*-wasn't that what they all were doing? Trying to stay afloat amidst the tides of life?
Before she could respond, Pope walked up, looking slightly out of breath. He had a book clutched in his hand.
"Hey, are you guys heading to the Boneyard later?" Pope asked, looking between Grace and John B.
"I was planning on it," Grace replied. "What about you, Pope?"
Pope hesitated for a moment, then shrugged. "I could use some air. A change of scenery."
John B. looked at Pope, then turned to Grace with a small, knowing smile. "We'll all meet there. Get ready for some chaos. JJ's probably got something up his sleeve."
Grace's heart fluttered at the mention of JJ. His mischievous grin and carefree attitude had always made her smile, but she couldn't ignore the feelings growing inside her for him-feelings she hadn't yet been able to sort through.
As they walked down the sand to the Boneyard, the air thick with salt, Grace felt herself caught in a whirlwind of emotions. John B., Pope, JJ-all of them had become important to her in different ways. And yet, there was something else, something unspoken that neither of the boys seemed to acknowledge.
Grace wasn't sure if she wanted to acknowledge it either.
