Faina's pov
I strolled into the dining room and I was met with Ulyana already seated and sipping her coffee. Mama stood by the window, her eyes fixed on the city below. I plopped down beside Ulyana, snagging a croissant from the basket.
"Morning,Clone " I said, nudging Ulyana with my elbow.
Ulyana smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Morning, Half. You are way too chirpy today. What's up? Are you going on a mission or something?"
"No I'm not going to any mission, though that wouldn't be such a bad idea. School is getting really boring, I need a change of scenery and routine, I have stared at those brick walls for way too long," I murmured.
Mama turned from the window, her gaze sweeping the room. "Good morning, girls. Fai, you have exams coming up can you at least pretend like you take them seriously, oh and the fighting has to stop. There is no need to pick a fight with everyone, sure you can take on someone of any size but that is besides the point. You practically reside at your Principal's office at this point, I'm sure he is exhausted of seeing your face and dealing with your temper." She said as she took her seat at the table. It's too early for a lecture.
We chatted about our plans for the day, Ulyana discussing her upcoming exams, while I regaled them with stories of my latest escapades. Mama listened, a small smile playing on her lips.
As we finished our breakfast, Ulyana pushed her plate away and leaned back in her chair. I know she wants to say something and judging from her body language it can't be good. The conversation flowed easily, until Ulyana suddenly spoke up, her voice low and serious.
"Um, Mama?"
Mama's gaze snapped Ulyana. Ulyana's eyes locked onto Mama's. "Where is he? Is he dead? Does he know about us? Did he really abandon us?"
The room fell silent. I felt a jolt of surprise, my eyes darting to Mama. She hesitated, I couldn't really read her expression.
"We're sixteen now I think it's time we knew the truth. Whatever it is we can handle it." Ulyana said with her voice still polite. Why is she saying "We" this hoe is the only one feeling this way. I know I don't care about that man. I don't know why I have to be dragged into this.
Mama's eyes narrowed, a hint of warning in her voice. "Ulyana, this isn't the time...."
Ulyana cut her off, her tone unyielding. "I've always wondered, you know. I want answers and I'd like to maybe um, you know um maybe meet him someday."
I watched as Mama's mask slipped, a glimmer of unease visible beneath. For a moment, I thought she might actually tell us the truth. But then her expression hardened, the shutters closing once more.
Ulyana's face fell, but she didn't push the issue. Not yet, anyway. I knew my sister, and I knew she wouldn't mention this again just to make Mama happy.
" She is right, you have to tell her. Just answer her this time and we will end this discussion here," I say backing up my sister. She was giving up too soon, she knows how much she wants these answers yet she gives in so easily.
" Fine, Your father is alive and kicking in Russia and I'm not sure if he does know about the two of you." Mama answered
" So what is he like? Do we look like him? Is he in the mafia?" Ulyana asks, not being able to contain the excitement.
" He is in the mafia. I don't know what he is like now but very long back, while I was living with him in Russia he had a strong personality, very similar to Faina's. He was not the easiest person to deal with but he was a great dad. Our sons adored him and I don't know.. he looks like you the most, you even got his ice blue eyes" Mama says before letting out a sigh. I'm assuming she means Ulyana when she says she looks like Vladamir because I took most of my mom's features although my twin and I do look a lot alike.
" Sons? You mean we have brothers? And we have never met them. That just blows my mind," Ulyana rants.
" Six to be precise, the other two are twins like us and they are our half brothers, they are also the youngest," I blurted out. By the time I realised what I had said it was already too late. Well they both didn't know I knew about Sperm donor and his family, I think I know enough about them.
" What don't look at me like that. I'm a tracker for a reason. I also got curious at some point," I tell them as I defend myself. I knew exactly who sperm donor was at the age of ten. I still can't believe it took Ulyana this long to actually push this matter.
"Only you could manage to dig up secrets about our family without even trying," Ulyana said in amusement.
"Hey, someone has to keep things interesting around here," I say as I wink at her.
" Alright look, I promise I will tell you more about your father when I get back I'll be in Saudi Arabia for two days and when I come back we will talk and I will tell you the full story," Mama said with a solemn expression.
" You going to Saudi Arabia? Can I come with you? Mama I really need an escapade, I promise once I get back my books and I will be inseparable soulmates.," I smiled and crossed my fingers as I put forth my request to my mother.
" Tempting offer, believe me baby I would have agreed but I need you here to handle things with Santiago and you obviously need to take care of your sister, you know I don't like separating you both and Ulyana doesn't like being alone in the house." she said with a tight piped smile.
Boring, uncle Santi never lets me go into the real action he says I will learn best by observation. I doubt I learn anything by sitting in a vehicle and watching footage of the mission.
Blanca and I are the same age yet uncle Santi let's her go on missions and assassinate, I on the other hand, that's another story. I only get to actually use my training when I'm on a mission with Mama or running her errands.
