"I bought that girl everything. A cell phone, designer clothes, shoes, bags...and she still fucked another man."
I told Jennifer in confidence yet she still consoled me. I was no longer ashamed of how my relationship with Miranda played out.
I had Jennifer now, and life was finally going how it was supposed to.
"Listen..", she paused while rubbing my back sweetly. She looked at me with those loving brown eyes. "You will never have to worry about that kind of heartbreak ever again as long as you're with me, baby."
We shared a few tap kisses after her response. Jennifer was a heaven-sent. She saved me from my darkest moments and helped me regain my true self.
After we finished our conversation, she made my favorite lunch—a turkey and cheese sub—and left for work.
Jenni was a registered nurse (RN) at Ceder-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. She worked long hours yet still found the time to give her all to me. I am so blessed to have her.
After I finished my sub, I washed my plate and headed to my at-home studio to test out some new sounds for a song I wrote last night.
As I sifted through the beats my producer and manager sent me, I got a phone call from an unfamiliar number.
"Who the...", I whispered under my breath. I picked up my phone with my left hand.
Reluctant to answer, I decided to. For all I know, it could be an important call.
I pushed the answer button and pressed the phone to my ear.
"Hello?", I answered curiously.
As the word hello escaped my lips, the person on the other end responded without hesitation.
"I'm outside Resey, let's talk".
My heart dropped. I knew that tone..that nickname from anywhere.
Then, Miranda hung up. Not knowing how to react or feel, I slammed my phone down on my table and rubbed my face.
The last thing I ever wanted was for her to come here and destroy the peace I've rebuilt for myself.
Knowing Miranda, she was not going to leave until she saw me. I wouldn't want Jenni to come home and see her here.
I pulled myself together and headed up the stairs and through the foyer.
Before opening the front door, I can see the outline of her body through the stained glass doors. It really was her.
I opened the door, ready for any battles coming my way.
She looked up at me, beaming with joy and a relieved look on her face.
We shared an awkward yet familiar stare. I couldn't stop myself from looking into her eyes, it was as if something was forcing me to keep my eyes on hers.
She broke the eye contact and looked down nervously uttering, "Hey."
I snapped out of my trance, "Listen, you know you're not supposed to be here Miranda."
She looked back up at me, sharpening her eyes. "Yes, I am", she claimed boldly.
I hardened my stance, "And what makes you think you have the right to come here?"
She began to form that stupid smirk that appears when she's trying to get me upset.
"Baby...", she takes a step closer to me, running her fingers down my torso.
I clench my jaw to stop myself from touching her and slightly move backward.
"You know you've got some damn nerv-", I uttered before being interrupted.
"Spare me the bullshit Resey!", she snapped at me.
She continued, "I love you, and I want to make things right."
I almost laughed. This woman cannot be serious.
I don't think she took my amusement too kindly.
"What's funny? Don't do that to me Resey," she pleaded.
The amusement quickly faded.
"Do what to you? You almost ruined my life, Miranda!"
She pressed her tongue in her cheek, looking around frantically to stop tears from falling from her eyes. The guilt was clear as day.
"I didn't forget how I gave you my all, I didn't forget how you dogged me and fucked other men behind my back," I let out.
I couldn't hold the hurt in anymore. I wanted her to feel the pain and agony I felt. I want her to share my pain.
She looked back up at me revealing her tears, "You don't have to curse at me, I know what I did okay?"
"Don't tell me what to do, I'm allowed to be mad," I spat back at her, hitting the door with the side of my fist.
She began to sob, "I came here to apologize."
Seeing her crying triggered something in me and all the feelings of vengeance and aggression left my body in an instant. It felt terrible. Even after all the pain, she caused me, all the sleepless nights..I still loved her.
I stepped out of the doorway and pulled her close to me, hugging her. Her sobs became more powerful as I held her. I began to cry too. We were both broken.
She picked her head off my chest and looked up at me with mascara running down her cheeks, "I'm sorry. I was wrong. I should've never left you."
I looked down at her. I felt sorry for her, she lost a great guy. She never gave a damn about me until I was gone.
Seeing the hope in her eyes crushed me. I could never take her back, she took me for granted.
But she already knows that.
I stared down into her eyes, still holding her. I wiped the running mascara from her cheeks and kissed her forehead.
"I'm sorry too, Miranda."
I dropped my arm from her waist and walked back through the doorway.
I could feel her eyes piercing the back of my head as she pleaded, "Please Resey, I love you."
I didn't even turn to look at her. I uttered, "Please, save us both the heartbreak, and don't come around here anymore." before closing the door behind me.
