the creak of the front door echoes through the quiet, but you don't move. you sit still in the bathtub, fully clothed, lost in a state of numbness. the water continues to flow, overflowing from the tub and splashing onto the floor. you are barely aware of it, your energy and will to react long gone.
then, the sound of the bathroom door opening catches your attention. a part of you wants to look up. to see who has entered. but your eyelids feel too heavy to lift. he steps into the bathroom, and his eyes widen with alarm as he takes in the scene. the bathtub is overflowing, water trickling down onto the floor. his heart aches at the sight of you, sitting in the tub, fully clothed, head leaned back against the wall.
with a sense of urgency, he darts forward, quickly turning off the tap and preventing the water from flooding further. his focus then shifts to you, his eyes filled with worry and concern.
he kneels down beside the tub, his hand gently shaking your shoulder. "hey," he speaks softly, his voice laced with anxiety. "wake up, please. you're scaring me." his eyes search your face, desperate for a sign of response.
your eyelids flutter open, and your gaze meets his. but no words come. you simply sit there, eyes locked on him.
he can't bear to see you like this. without a second thought, he reaches in, wrapping his arms around you and lifting you out of the tub. effortlessly, he cradles you against his chest, water from your drenched clothes soaking through his own. as he holds you close, he can feel the water from your clothes seeping into his. but right now, he couldn't care less. his only concern is you.
he begins murmuring apologies, his voice filled with remorse. "i'm so sorry," he whispers, his arms unconsciously tightening around you. "i shouldn't have left. i never should have left you alone. i'm sorry."
you try to speak, but your voice comes out hoarse and shaky. all you manage to utter is a single word: "cold." the wet garments cling to your skin, the coldness seeping into your bones. he immediately recognizes your discomfort and quickly moves to grab a towel.
he doesn't want to let go of you, not even for a moment. so, he reaches for a towel, his arms still wrapped securely around you. he lifts it from the rack and carefully wraps it around you, enveloping you in the warmth of the fabric.
his arms then return to their position around you, his embrace just as firm as before. he holds you close, trying to infuse some much-needed warmth into your trembling form.
he runs his hand up and down your back, gently trying to rub some warmth into your skin through the towel. his eyes never leave your face, concern and guilt written all over his features. "i've got you," he murmurs, his voice soothing. "i'm here now. i won't leave again. i promise."
you finally find your voice, and in a hoarse whisper, you manage to say, "don't leave."
his heart twinges at the raw vulnerability in your words. he tightens his embrace, his lips pressing a gentle kiss to the top of your head. "i'm not going anywhere," he whispers back, his voice firm. "i'm here, and i'm staying. i promise."
