Time continued to pass. Days turned to weeks, and weeks turned into months. As time went on, Amarathines abdomen was getting larger daily. Her casual dresses were altered to accommodate her stomach. She was abnormally large, compared to her normal slim body. "I would like to see a doctor or a midwife, I need to know my pregnancy status." She said this in a very demanding voice to her servant.
In the suite entered a petite Indian woman, about 5'2 and 130 pounds. Her mahogany colored eyes, and artificial gems on her face, made her seem relatable. "Hello Madame. My name is Putri. I specialize in pregnancy, diseases, and newborn care. How may I be of assistance today?" I, Amarathine, jumped right into my spiel. "My stomach is so large, and I am constantly nauseous and in pain. I realize these are very normal symptoms, but i'd just like to be looked at, and confirmed as healthy in my pregnancy."
The young midwife, pointing her hand towards my bed, gestured me to lay down. I did as she instructed and I waited. She lifted my dress, until my stomach was revealed. It was difficult to see past it from my position, but the mauve colored stretch marks were in plain sight. Putri placed her ear and my stomach, she was examining left and right and doing tests of all sorts. She looked at me, as though she had come to a conclusion. "Ms. Jacobi, it seems you are abnormally large abdominally. This is to be expected in your case, for you are having twins."
My face lit up with excitement, confusion, and worry. "Twins?" I asked in almost a whisper.
"Twins." Putri replied. "But Ms. Jacobi, I need you to proceed with the upmost caution, one child is weaker than the other. If things go as they are going right now, the stronger child will overpower the weaker one."
"Does this occur often?" I sounded more worried than I expected.
"No. It is usually common in a certain circumstance we call split pregnancy." she replied.
"What exactly is split pregnancy?"
Putri sighed dramatically.
"Split pregnancy is when 2 different sperm, from 2 different men attach themself to 2 separate eggs, but they grow and develop at the same time, making it seem like regular twin babies. So in retrospect, a woman with this condition, will carry two children in the womb, both containing different paternal make up."
"So each child will have a different dad, but the same mother, and will be born at the same time?" I knew deep down that if this was even remotely a possibility, it could pertain to me.
"Yes." my midwife said.
"I know deep down, this is possibly what's happening to me. Can you test for it?" Putri looked shocked. "Certainly, let me grab the test tubes.
Karma sure is a bitch, I thought silently.
