The dimly lit jail cell was quiet, except for the occasional echo of footsteps and murmurs from other inmates. It was the time of afternoon but Saachi was just seeing the black surroundings around her.
Saachi was sitting on the cold cement floor, her knees pulled to her chest, her gaze fixed on the tiny crack on the opposite wall. Her mind was numb, replaying the cruel remarks she'd overheard from the lady constable a while ago.
"Girls like her bring shame to their families. Good that her parents aren't alive to see this."
Her heart clenched, not out of anger but deep despair. She hadn't spoken since her arrest. She was too exhausted, too broken to fight anymore.
Suddenly, the metallic clang of the cell door opening echoed. Saachi’s ears perked up at the sound of familiar voices.
“Saachi!” Tejas's strong voice cut through the suffocating silence.
“Saachi, where are you?” Tahir followed, his voice laced with panic.
Saachi slowly raised her head. Her dull, tearless eyes met theirs. Tejas stood there, his tall figure rigid, his face pale with disbelief. Tahir, her childhood friend, looked equally stunned, his hands gripping the bars of her cell.
“Dadu…” Saachi whispered hoarsely, her voice almost breaking.
“Saachi!” Tahir called again, this time with more urgency. “What… What is this? What’s happening?”
Tejas stepped forward, his voice trembling with controlled anger. “Beta, how did this happen? Who dared to do this to you?”
Saachi’s lips quivered, but no words came out. Her body felt like it weighed a thousand pounds as she forced herself to stand. She took slow, hesitant steps toward the bars, her bare feet dragging against the cold floor.
Tejas reached out, gripping the bars tightly. His weathered hand trembled. “You don’t belong here. What is this nonsense? Who put you here?”
Tahir’s eyes scanned her face, noticing the hollow look in her eyes and the faint bruises on her wrists. “Saachi, talk to us. Say something. We saw the news… We came here on the first flight. Tell us this isn’t true!”
Saachi stopped just a few feet away from them, her lips parting slightly before closing again. She shook her head slowly. “I… I don’t know what to say,” she whispered, her voice breaking.
Tejas’s expression softened. “Beta, you don’t need to say anything. We’re here now. We’ll get you out of this.”
Tahir nodded, his voice firm despite the emotion cracking through. “This isn’t you, Saachi. You’ve done nothing wrong. We know that.”
A tear finally slipped from Saachi’s eye as she murmured, “Everyone thinks I’ve brought shame… that I’ve dishonored my parents… I’ve ruined their reputation, Dadu.” Her voice wavered, and she stepped closer, gripping the bars lightly. “I’m so sorry… I couldn’t protect their name.”
“Enough!” Tejas’s voice was sharp. His military tone surfaced as he barked, “Don’t you dare blame yourself for this, Saachi. Your parents would never think that. Never.”
Tahir reached through the bars, his hand brushing hers. “You’re not alone, Saachi. We’re here now. We’ll fight this. Whoever’s done this to you will pay.”
Saachi let out a bitter laugh, her gaze dropping to the floor. “Fight? How? I’m bound in a marriage I never wanted, and now I’m here… in this place.” Her voice broke completely, and she whispered, “I don’t think I can take it anymore.”
