I suppose it was a good thing I didn't listen.
I never made the trip back upstairs, just passing asleep on the couch the second Nico left. But since I was on the first floor, I was able to hear the repetitive knocking that sounded like a part of my dream before I realized it was coming from the front door.
Fuck, I forgot about the cleaners.
I could've held myself accountable and cleaned up my own mess from last night, but it was Christmas Day and my hangover was making it hard to even stand up and walk to the entryway. So I decided to give myself some grace and let them do their job as I stayed out of the way, curled up in an actually warm bed with a trashcan beside me.
I couldn't look them in their eyes when I let the cleaners in.
"Burglary," I lied sheepishly, scratching the back of my head.
It was such a shit and obvious lie I had no choice but to tell them I'd be upstairs until they were done.
"Just let me know and I'll come back down to pay."
Stephanie waved me off, still avoiding eye contact as well, but seemingly not too bothered by the mess. "We were paid in advance. You might want to... buy new paint while we are gone though. We can't fix the walls."
I grimaced. "Got it. Merry Christmas, by the way!"
They didn't say anything.
I stumble upstairs, having to take a break as I climb the steps to prevent myself from vomiting up whatever was in my stomach to do so. I needed to drink a shit ton of water, and also eat. I assumed there had to be a single-door dasher and deli opened today, so I collapsed into bed and placed an order for liquid IV, a breakfast sandwich, and random fruit that I wouldn't overthink eating too badly.
I didn't want to think about eating or my body or my family so instead I thought about Nico. He said he'd come back in the afternoon, though I didn't ask if that meant 12 PM or 4.
