Fours years ago...
Dear Diary,
I learned how to do my first magic trick today! Since I'm half ghost and half human, I can get older...so daddy says that I learned to pull a bunny out of a hat when I was seven years old. Now, I'm eight and now I know how to do some simple card tricks. It's really fun. I wish mommy could see me do these tricks. But I know she'll always be with me since she gave me her spider tattoo...that's how I know she'll always be there.
~Lizzie Showenhower
I read the entry from my journal, and shut it--feeling the tears stinging along the rims of my eyes threatening to spill. I knew that if I started crying now, I wouldn't stop until I was completely dry of tears.
I missed her. That day was clear to my mind, even if it happened several years ago. I'm twelve now, and I have to be able to handle things better. My dad had been teaching me to join Circus Gothica, which he wanted me to take part in being the magician of the show. Since Circus Gothica hadn't worked out many years earlier because of him--my dad started it up in the Ghost Zone. Hosting a large event with all the acts in a circus, only better. Of course, my dad took the responsibility of ringmaster of all the acts. We had ghosts who came to join Circus Gothica once they heard about it and performed in it on certain nights in the Ghost Zone.
I shuffle the deck of cards in one hand letting the stack of cards flap against my fingers. Tonight, I'd be performing after the Chaos Twins. I glance into the long mirror at myself. I'd chosen to wear a small black magician's hat with a scarlet lace around it, shiny black tights, scarlet red boots reaching up to my knees, a white shirt with a black bow tie under a long red coat much like my dad's, which is similar to mine.
"Lizzie, you're on in five," one of the managers calls out to me, when I leave my dressing room.
I watch as two identical female twins flip into the air and landing at exactly the same time. My dad speaks to the ground in an announcer-like voice, laughing along with the audience at the Chaos Twins perfect synchronization when they spin back and hit one of the side actors on the side. I flip the cards from one hand to another watching the red and black colors blur with the flips. My dad claims I'm one of the best magicians in the Ghost Zone. It wasn't too hard to believe.
"Let's give a big hand to the Chaos Twins!" my dad announces, and the spirits in the crowd cheer loudly as the Chaos Twins bow to the crowd.
The twins leave the stage, and nod to me. The one of the left grins, "Knock 'em dead."
"They're already dead, stupid," the twin on the right says to the other.
The two identical sisters begin to argue when I hear my dad announcing me. "And now, ghouls and spirits! We will see some true magic! You know her, you love her, my own daughter--the Illusionist!"
I enter the stage with a proud smile on my face, and wave at the crowds of chanting ghosts who clap and wail loudly. My dad grins at me, then lets me take the stage.
"Hi ghosts and freaky spirits!" I announce to the crowd, my voice projecting from the mike attached to my clothes. "I'd like to start the show off with a question, how are you all liking this circus so far?"
Ghosts uproar with excitement and cheering. I fan out the pair of cards I hold in my hand, and shuffle them in the air. I shift the cards from one hand to the other. The crowd watches in awe as I shuffle the cards into the air, then I hop into the air letting the cards I've let go of swirl around me wildly. Special magician cards, which have a special touch of ghostly energy by me. My being slips into paper of the cards, and I fly the cards to the top of the high wire. The cards swirl around to allow me to form myself again, but this time standing on the high wire. I balance on the wire nonchalantly as the audience wails in excitement then I take off my hat. I reach inside to pull out a speaker to attach to my red coat, and speak into it with confidence.
