Chapter 10-Isaac
The ball was getting boring. Jude had gone off with Lloyd because they got on so well, but hardly saw each other. I could see them now, Jude whispering something in Lloyd’s ear that made the quick-witted sky-eyed boy almost double-up with laughter. They had been ignoring everyone else all night. There was a noise from the balcony, but I didn’t bother looking up. No one got through the security here.
Abigail came over to me, taking down her copper hair from the bun that it was in. As Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl in the World’ came on, she stood a little too close for comfort and said, ‘Isaac, let’s dance,’ then pulled me onto the dance floor before I had time to protest.
The hall had the lighting in the just the right places so that everyone’s skin lit up like Times Square. Abigail was a pretty girl, no doubt, but she could be boring and was a bit too bitchy. Her skin was clear, you could only just tell she had foundation on. Someone had expertly applied her makeup so that her brown eyes looked doe-like. Blair’s looked like that in the mornings, back when we slept in the same bed. I blinked, focusing on the attractive girl in front of me, her pink lips looking smooth and...sticky.
Ughh. No one wants that.
I frowned at her as she pushed her body closer to mine, pelvis against pelvis and let rip for the chorus. I winced a bit-she never really could sing. I had known her since I was 12, we had met at a get together and had kept each other company. It was good then-she was bitchy to the point of funny-ness, not rudeness. Her rhythm was off and she was being a little too enthusiastic. I had seen Blair dance once, after she had stopped talking to me. She had put on a slow song and was moving to it, inconspicuously, just by herself, like she was letting the music control her. It was beautiful and elegant, and I had wanted to just sit there and watch her hair fall over her shoulder and her cinnamon-coloured eyes close.
‘Isaac! How’s school going?’ Abigail asked, her face suddenly very close to mine. The song was still playing and I groaned internally. I didn’t want small talk I just wanted-
I just need to get my mind off Blair. And her perfect dancing. Oh, and her pouty lips and her pretty hair and her face when she wakes up next to me.
‘School’s great, Abi. Doing my A Levels now, then I shall go to university,’ I replied, putting a formal tone to my voice. The ball was for the elite, and the way she was dancing sure as hell didn’t reflect that, ‘Hey, once we finish this song, I’m going to have to go, okay?’
‘What, no more dancing?’ she made a face, her lips looking stickier because of the chandeliers.
‘No more dancing,’ I said as the song came to an end.
‘Well then, we’ll have to make this a night to remember, huh?’ she took my hand, her palm sweaty.
Blair holds everyone’s hands all the time. Especially mine. And when she did that her hands were never sweaty.
I’m pretty sure my face looked like a sulky child then as I was comparing Abi to Blair. I still had no idea why she was holding my hand, but I got the jist when she leaned in and-There was a cry of laughter from the balcony that was eerily familiar, but then I had no idea why she would be here. Kiran hated things like this-the dresses were too long, she said. I turned to look and there was Blair, looking adorably with her hair pulled back and a cute collared sleeveless top on. By the look on her face, it was obvious she had witnessed everything.
She opened her mouth to say something, but it looked like she was going to throw up. Blair bit her lip, something which I could never find not-sexy and ran.
