The air escapes my lungs despite my gasp, and I choke on a mouthful of blood when I exhale, coughing it onto Nina's face. She only laughs harder, her eyes widening with sadistic pleasure.
"Beautiful!" she screams, "You're so beautiful! So, so, so gorgeous!"
I stagger back from her, falling over and only being winded by hard ground, the overhead moonlight offering no safety in the darkness of Cowling. Despite my wound, I gurgle a grunt and pull out my own knife. It's only a lung. I still have the other one, and I'm not dead yet.
When she tries to stab down at me, I kick her forearm to save myself before rolling away. I struggle to my feet, warmth spilling down my stomach and pelvis as I pull my mask down over my face. The shallowness of my breath only allows me to puff weak whistles into its wind channels.
She walks after me like a hunter after a wounded animal, my blood droplets staining the snow as she drones on, "Like a work of art... My work of art."
I cough into the wooden mask, splashing my face with blood as I try to yell, "Help!"
There's no winning with a pierced lung, so I stumble towards any darkness I can find. Only, she pounces on me, smashing me into the snow face-first. I try to push myself up, but she shoves my face into the cold fluff, muffling my calls for help.
Nina holds me down with one hand as she cackles, "Go to sleep!"
My eyes widen at the catch phrase, and I expect a sharp pain in my back before someone tackles Nina off of me. I roll over and see Jane grappling with Nina in the snow, both of them grunting and yelling as they wrestle with each other's knives in a tangle of limbs.
Despite the piercing agony in my chest, I sit up and stumble over to them. Nina throws Jane aside, her wide eyes meeting mine as I stab and pin her forearm into the ground. Nina shrieks with laughter, and Jane comes back again, burying her knife in Nina's face. Only then does her laughter become horrified.
I sit back watching as Jane rips her knife out with manic eyes and stabs Nina over and over again until her face is unrecognizable. Soon enough, Jane's kitchen knife breaks against the skull, Nina long dead, but she stands up and continues to stomp her instead.
"Jane...!" I gasp for air.
She stops when her heel has broken through Nina's head and mashed her brains into mush, and her eyes lose their temper, "Shit, (Y/N)!"
"I know," I whine as she helps me stand, "In the lung..." I gasp, "Benny...?"
"Nina is with her," Jane whispers, holding me on her shoulder, "Our telepathy is scrambled here... I will carry you to the border."
"Right..." I cough again, staining the snow at our feet with a spray of blood, "Thought Nina... betrayed us."
Jane hauls me back to the trench, and Nina crests the hill before running over to us, "I knew I should have gone with you," she hisses, holding her hand over my wound, "How do you always manage to get yourself sliced up, damn it?"
Benny clambers over the edge of the trench as well, her eyes widening, "Fuck! Is he okay? Is he gonna die?"
I'm about to laugh at her before I choke on another mouthful of blood, which pours out from my lips. Jane and Nina double-time it as they carry me more than my own legs do.
Nina grunts as she helps me down into the trench while Jane goes to the other side to pull me up, and she says, "Jess believes in him, and so do I," she lets me go, her hands lingering on me before Jane hauls me up the other side, "My Prince is strong."
Benny scrambles up after me, grunting, "God, you make me sick!" before helping Jane carry me.

I wake up on an operating table, my insides pulsing with a dull ache. The bright lights above blind me as I try to sit up, but Slenda steps into view. She stops me from pulling off my nasal cannula with a gentle hand.
