When Tobi found out Slenda was stealing me for the evening and night, it took both Benny, Ann, and Jill to subdue her for the entire hour that her mood swing lasted. She'd been looking forward to sleeping with me for the night, and I think even Sally would've had a milder reaction if someone took Charlie away from her.
Slenda sits in her bedroom on one of her tufted leather chairs, and she keeps me held against her body, her arms around my chest as I sit on her lap. Normally, I'd be comfortable and cozy, but she hasn't said anything since she abducted me after Branding Zero. The rest of the Proxies will have to handle the introduction themselves.
I lean my head back into Slenda's collar, "How long are we staying like this?"
"Until I feel better," she buzzes.
Looking forward, my eyes scan the room. Her king-size canopy bed sits against the center of the far wall, two large windows on either side of it with ornate glass pane designs of demons that look similar to Slenda herself. One has hair just like her, and the other is bald. She also has a desk facing the bedroom door. Does this woman ever stop working? Who does she even work for? Why does she work for them?
My mind wanders long enough to bore me, so I look up at her and ask, "This silence is deafening, so can you tell me who those people are?" I nod at the windows, "Are they important figures of your kind?"
She sighs, her arms coiling tighter around me, "Ah, I suppose I never told you; those are my parents. We have not spoken to each other in a long while, so I must have pictures and other mementos to remember them by."
"They passed away?" I ask softly, my hand clasping around the top of hers.
"No," Slenda puts her other hand on mine, "Very fortunately, no. They live, but we have been out of contact for... What was it? Forty thousand years, I reckon. They reside in one of the lower layers of the Astral Realm, which I have not visited since moving into this layer – your reality."
I look up at her, "How do you not talk with your parents for forty thousand years? Family trouble? You don't seem like the type to cause trouble for your parents."
Slenda huffs, stroking my cheek with her thumb, "I was quite well-behaved, actually. I am also their first and only child."
"Think they'll disown you for falling in love with a lowly little human?" I smirk.
"If that is the cost of my love, then it is more than a fair price, indeed," she kisses the top of my head, "But, no, I doubt they would be so extreme. My parents are not so conservative as, say, Zalga's family tree."
"So, why did you separate?" I question, "Was it time to leave the nest?"
"I suppose you could say that... It was not yet time for me to become independent, but I was eager to prove myself. Having witnessed the power my parents commanded, I wished to assemble my own little family," she looks down at me, "And here I am."
I smile up at her, "Here we are," I stare ahead now, feeling my stomach churning, "This means we'll have to break the news to your parents at some point, then. We can afford to procrastinate, right?"
Slenda hums, glancing over at the glass panes depicting her parents, "Zalga takes precedence, and we will not give her time to breathe. One day, though, I will bring you to the Astral Realm – to meet my parents. They will certainly be surprised, but... I could not care less. This is my life to live; it does not matter that they gave it to me."
I let her words settle in my thoughts before I whisper, "Can I leave now?"
"Very well," she sighs, but when I move to get off her lap, she pulls me closer, kissing the back of my head repeatedly.
