Jane yelps with surprise when I envelope her in a hug, soon giving in to laughter when I lift her into the air. The sound of it fills me with more energy than before, and I give her a long kiss as I set her down on the floor.
"It seems I was given a haircut when I died," she sheepishly touches the ends of her short hair, "I wish I had awoken with its length back to normal."
"You've Scarecrow to thank for that," I laugh before regretting my words as Jane spots her killer standing in the background of the Proxy gathering.
Jane tenses up, but I bring her attention to me, "She's joined the mansion. She's not our enemy anymore."
Grimacing, Jane turns her eyes away from mine, "Slenda told me, I know. Scarecrow must be brave to show her face in front of me at a time like this."
Grasping at straws, I suggest, "Maybe she wants to apologize to you?"
Jane pushes past me, and I hold my breath, stopping myself from reaching out for her. Angel is close to Scarecrow already and getting in between Jane and her nemesis would only allow her grudge to fester. I doubt there'll be forgiveness anytime soon, but they were bound to run into each other sooner or later.
Scarecrow lowers her head as Jane approaches. The Proxies' rejoicing comes to an end, and everyone looks at Scarecrow, most smirking and others with a look in their eyes begging for blood. Angel glances between Jane and Scarecrow before locking eyes with me.
I close my eye and connect to Slenda, "Tell Angel to let them sort it out."
A second later, Angel nods at me and gives Jane space as she steps closer to Scarecrow. Jane stares at her, waiting for her slayer to speak.
Scarecrow looks up at Jane, "I'm not sorry for killing you."
I'm dumbfounded at her words, and the whole room murmurs in disgust.
Jane's shoulders tremble as she laughs at Scarecrow, "Normally, I have the heart to forgive others, but when evil has no remorse, that is a different story."
After a pause, Scarecrow steps closer to Jane, "I'm-"
Jane slams her fist into Scarecrow's mouth. The other girls block Angel from stepping in while my feet remain planted.
"Should I stop them?" Slenda rings in my head.
I must close my eye to summon the willpower to stay out of it, "Scarecrow can defend herself. Let's not insult her."
Jane has no weapon and neither does Scarecrow. I just wish Scarecrow would at least put up a defense, but Jane's attack only becomes fiercer until she becomes sluggish with exhaustion. At this point, Scarecrow's entire face is beaten bloody.
Scarecrow leans forward to hug Jane before she's struck again, "It was... never anything personal. Killing... was just my job."
Too surprised to throw Scarecrow off, Jane only mutters, "Cold bitch."
"I'm no longer blinded... by blood," Scarecrow rasps, blood draining from her nose, "I have no regrets for killing you... because it got me to where I am now, and this place... it's amazing. I hope... one day... we can think of each other as sisters."
Escaping Scarecrow's hold, Jane kicks her away, "You are nothing more than a sickly cur taken in by the grace of Slenda. You will never be my 'sister.'"
Jane leaves the encirclement of the Proxies to stand at my side while Slenda nudges Ann to tend to Scarecrow's wounds. I know for a fact that Ann only does so because it's an order. Scarecrow wipes the blood off of her lips and tries to smile at me. All I can do is return a look of pity. Her natural coldness betrays her hidden desire for family and love, it seems.
