Dawn had returned to her room just as the sun was beginning to creep over the horizon, watching Syrena leave so she could distribute orders for all military personnel for the ball. It was an important event, and it needed to be secured as such.
"See you tonight." Dawn had said to her retreating form, arms wrapped around her legs as she brought her knees up to her chest. Her gaze was lazy and hooded, although her tone implied something more than just a casual goodbye.
"Tonight." Syrena said with a nod before disappearing down the tower.
Now, Dawn was sitting in the comfort of her room, staring into space as her thoughts ran away from her. Was she really expected to attend a ball tonight, amidst all this madness? She would, of course she would, but she thought it to be a little impractical. Even so, she couldn't deny the small flickers of excitement building within her chest. She didn't know what a ball looked like, nor how to act at one, but she assumed it was a rather fancy affair. Given what she knew of Monstrakind, she could expect nothing less but a glittering assemblage; even if it was organised under such short notice. Or was it? How long had Zyire been planning this? From what Dawn could tell, it appeared as though the king had long been planning events such as these.
A light knock at the door caused her to jump slightly before quickly settling back down again. Assuming it was Sika or Ricard, although the latter rarely knocked, she called out, "Come in."
What Dawn did not expect was the sight of strawberry blonde hair to step anxiously through the now open door frame, freezing her in place. Was her mind playing tricks on her again?
"Freya." She uttered as if she could not believe it, pinching herself to ensure her medication was still working. It was truly a credit to Nysteria's profession, she had not been suffering as much as a result of her new medicine.
"Can we talk?" Her sister all but whispered, staring at the floor and unable to meet her gaze. "Please?"
"Of course." There was only a small amount of hesitation when Dawn patted the vacant space on the couch next to her, heart beating wildly in her chest. No matter what Freya had said, or what she had done, she would always see her as her little sister.
The young Watcher nodded before hesitantly moving deeper into the room, eventually sitting beside the hybrid, fingers clenching and unclenching in her lap as she struggled to find her words.
Dawn waited patiently for her sister to start speaking, a thousand possibilities running through her mind as to what Freya had pulled her aside for. The silence was somewhat awkward, although the princess would suffer it if that meant she would finally hear what was on Freya's mind.
"I had this speech prepared." The younger girl laughed condescendingly, hiding her face in her hands. "I had run over how I wanted this conversation to go over and over, and yet now that I'm here, I don't know where to begin."
"Take your time, I'm in no rush." Dawn would wait forever if she had to.
"I'm being pulled in so many different directions, sometimes it is hard to know where I stand and how to keep up." Freya raked a hand through her hair, looking as torn as she sounded. "I don't even know who I am anymore."
I know the feeling, Dawn thought darkly before catching the rest of her words. "What do you mean?"
"I can't tell you, that's the most frustrating part."
"Did Alani do this?"
"I wish Alani was the biggest problem I had." Dawn did not recognise the girl sitting beside her, but hadn't Rose said that Freya's personality was much different to the one she faked around her? "Anyway, this isn't what I wanted to say."
