"Here." Dr. Anzeel pushed the tray over to Enterprise, the brown-haired woman blushing just a little. "I... Know it's not especially fancy, but this is all happening so fast, so... Well, it's what we can do for you on short notice, not that we're exactly a three-star restaurant to begin with."
Enterprise looked at the tray in front of her. Anzeel had scrounged up some things from the cafeteria to bring to her new resident. The doctor remained somewhat apologetic. "...I don't even know what food you'd like, but then I remembered that food would be pretty new to you. I hope it leaves a good impression."
Enterprise looked over the tray at what Dr. Anzeel had managed to scrounge up, and noted that the doctor was watching her intently. It was all things that Enterprise recognized- A cheeseburger, ice cream, soda... The carrier picked up the burger first, and decided to take a bite.
It... Startled her. She nearly dropped her food.
A mixture of flavors suddenly invaded her mouth in ways she wasn't prepared to encounter. Even aside from the heat from the recent cooking, Anzeel had assembled the burger out of all the toppings she could find- pickle, lettuce, tomato, red onions, cheese... Crunchy and sweet and spicy and sour all at once to someone who had never experienced such a thing.
She was, all at once, stunned, startled, and excited.
So, she went at it with all the manners of a sailor whose Lieutenant wasn't watching, chomping down on bite after bite after bite until it was all gone.
Dr. Anzeel smiled. "Looks like you've taken to that sort of thing. I'll try to get you a variety of things to see what you like best, all right?"
Enterprise nodded slowly, having a blush on her face as she realized how she might have looked. "All right."
"But before that..." The doctor produced a napkin and wiped some mustard off of Enterprise's cheek. "There. Whatever happens, I want you to be able to have time when you're able to enjoy yourself like this, okay?"
==================
In the present, Enterprise sat up in her bed, looking around. She had woken up in the middle of the night, which, while not common, was an accepted part of her life. Being the de facto leader of the Eagle Union's Kansen, a celebrated war heroine, and all her other responsibilities to the war besides, she was not someone whose sleep was entirely uninterrupted.
This time was different.
Word had gotten out that the captured rebel Kansen had been informed of the role of Dr. Marion Anzeel, and hearing that name spoken openly had resurrected some old memories.
The carrier went into her bathroom and washed her face, then put her hands on either side of the sink before looking at herself in the mirror, remaining entirely silent. She knew herself well enough that she had nothing to say to her reflection, but there was one thing that she wished above anything else.
That there were more Kansen who knew her.
Back in the early days, it was just her and Anzeel as people were still deciding whether Kansen were even worth the trouble, but during those times when she wasn't being tested or examined, there was just time spent with the woman who was responsible for her creation. Enty wondered what kind of person she would be if Anzeel hadn't been there, or even if she would ever have thought of herself as a person at all.
Enterprise looked into the depths of the sink. the worst part about thinking about Dr. Anzeel was... She didn't know. That woman... She didn't know what had become of her. She didn't. Not even the commander did. No one had seen hide or hair of her for years, the doctor seemingly vanishing into history shortly after the Kansen programs got fully off of the ground.
