Alright, so the French Communist Party (PCF) was really important to the french resistance in ww2, and the Maquis is the shrubland around the Mediterranean, where French guerrilla fighters (the maquisards) hid. The Maquis is also the name of the guerrilla bands in general. I imagine that Free France and Maquis are separate entities since the FFF was focused more on Africa and the Maquis is more local (Maquis being the og France, FFF being a human who got promoted). So at the time, you had three Frances (including Vichy France/the ex French Colonial Empire) running around causing trouble.
