The tension in the air was palpable as Austin and I stood there, an awkward silence between us. I couldn't stop looking at him, the weight of everything we'd been through making my heart race. I hadn't expected it to happen like this, with the entire group of my friends coming at us from all directions. But there they were, charging toward us like a herd of excited animals, faces beaming with surprise and excitement.
“Finally!” Kiwi yelled, her goofy grin spreading from ear to ear. She had a habit of making every situation feel lighter, and right now, she was a ray of sunshine. "At last! Vinny understood the one who is awesome!”
I couldn't help but blush, my face heating up under the intensity of Kiwi’s teasing. Austin shot me a playful smirk, clearly enjoying this turn of events, and I felt a flutter of embarrassment mixed with something else—something I hadn't quite figured out yet.
Rachel, who had been quietly watching from a distance, crossed her arms with her usual fierce attitude. Her eyes glinted with both amusement and a bit of warning as she stepped forward and pointed a finger at Austin. “You better take care of her, mate,” she said firmly, her voice full of authority. “If you break her heart, you’ll be facing my wrath. Got it?”
Austin raised his eyebrows in mock surprise, his usual carefree grin now tinged with seriousness. “Got it,” he replied, a touch of humor in his voice. “Wouldn’t dream of breaking her heart.”
The group let out a collective cheer at his response, and suddenly, the air felt lighter. My friends were happy for me, and I could feel a weight lift off my shoulders. For the first time in a while, everything seemed to be falling into place.
“Finally!” Kiwi repeated, bouncing on her heels. “Vinny’s not living in denial anymore!”
I rolled my eyes but couldn’t suppress a smile. “Shut up, Kiwi,” I teased, nudging her shoulder playfully.
“Well, it’s about time!” Sierra chimed in, her voice full of the energy that only she could bring. “I’ve been waiting for this day forever! You two are cute together.”
Sierra was always the first to embrace anything that brought fun into the group. She gave Austin a thumbs-up and winked at me. “You made the right choice, Vinny. No more mister perfect Kevin Diaz, huh?”
