At home, after the movie night, Melanie cried for five minutes, before deciding she wasn't going to waste her time crying for a boy who practically had nothing to do with her anymore. Of course, it hurts to be cheated on, but she was going to get over it sooner or later— sooner was a better option.
She hadn't managed to fall asleep, so she picked up her phone, unlocked it and called the first person she thought of—Cody. After a couple of rings he answered, and considering it was 2:37 on Monday morning, she was quite surprised.
"Hello?" he said, sounding more like a question than a statement. "Hey," she said. "Not to be rude or anything, but why are you calling me at," he said, pausing for a second to check the time, "2:40 in the morning? Is there something wrong?"
She sighed, "Nothing's wrong, I just wanted to talk to someone and you where the first one that came to my mind."
Melanie didn't know this, but Cody's heart started pounding really fast, feeling like it was going to explode at any minute. He smiled and said, "Well, t-that's really n-nice to hear." He mentally face-palmed himself after stuttering and ruining such a perfect moment.
Melanie chuckled, "Do you think it would be crazy to meet at the park right now?" "Uhm, no, I dont think so, why?" Cody was confused at this moment.
"I don't like talking on the phone that much," she responded. "All right, I'll see you at the park in ten minutes," he said as he checked the time once again.
"You don't have to," she said, feeling a bit guilty for taking her friend's sleep, "I know I don't, but I want to," Cody said, while grabbing his jacket and walking downstairs, silently. "Thank you," Melanie said, smiling and standing up from her bed. "There's no problem," he said smiling for a second, before hanging up.
Right at that moment, he had gotten inside his and his mom's car, which was going to be completely his once he'd be parting off to University. By that time, his mom would've gotten herself a new car, and she would've seen that her son needs a car if he wants to drive off to NYU to pursue his dreams.
After some minutes of driving and parking near the park's small playground, Cody was getting out of the car, he couldn't help but think of Melanie saying he was the first person she thought of, when she called him.
"So, what's wrong?" Cody asked as Melanie turned to look at him beside her, on the park's cold bench.
She opened her mouth to say that nothing was wrong, but Cody spoke before her.
"Don't dare say nothing," he said, knowing she was going to lie before even saying a thing. "You know me too well," she said, shaking her head in the process. Cody chuckled, "We've been friends for a long time, you know."
She looked at swing-set in front of them and said, "I just wish things we're like they used to be."
Cody looked at her, furrowed eyebrows and lips pressed together, forming a straight line.
"H-how so?" Stuttering became a habit when he was around her. "I don't know, I want it to be like when we had cooking class, with Allison, and we were always the one getting her in trouble. She's always been a good girl and we've always gotten her into our trouble, but that's what's beautiful about our friendship. Also, when we gathered in any of our houses and watched movies, ate pizza, and did so many things together."
Melanie tried to hide it, but she had a tear rolling down her cheek.
"We did that mostly in middle school and start of high school," Cody said, realizing that what she said, had some type of meaning, "We've been separating, each of us going our own ways, different dreams and all. You want us to be together again, how we used to before we worried about... The future?"
Melanie turned to face him, and was surprised when she saw he was already looking at her. She looked down at her hands and said, "That's exactly what I meant."
"Well, it can still be that way, you know," he said, grabbing one of her hands. She liked the warming sensation of his hand against her cold one.
She looked up at him, "How? You're going to New York, Allison is going to California, I don't know where I'm going, yet. We're all separating forever in three months!"
He felt her tense up, "Hey, don't worry about that right now, we can still have the best three months of our lives if we decide it."
He stared into her eyes, getting lost in her beautiful eyes.
She stared back, a strange feeling in her stomach.
A few seconds went by, when Cody couldn't take it anymore, but he knew if he didn't control himself, he would make a terrible mistake. Sad thing was, he couldn't control the urge of looking at her lips and touching them with his.
So, that's what he did.
Melanie was surprised by the sudden action, but Cody was even more surprised when he felt her lips moving with his.
Suddenly, they both realized what they were doing and broke it off.
"I-I'm s-so sorry," Cody said, blushing from embarrassment.
"N-no, don't w-worry," Melanie said, blushing as well. She cleared her throat, to save her from stuttering again, and said, "I think, I think we have to go, we have school later on."
"Yeah, true," Cody said standing up, "See you later, I guess."
"Sure," she said giving him a faint smile.
They turned and started walking away from each other, but later on stopped, turning around again and giving each other a hug. As the hug commenced to break, Cody pecked her lips, then smiled as she blushed.
"See you, later," he said, with a small smirk, and Melanie just nodded, looking down before turning around and walking to her car.
Cody turned and walked to his car, but looked back at Melanie, to catch her looking back at him, they both smiled.
Guess you never know what to expect from a meet-me-at-the-park-on-a-Monday-at-3:00A.M visit to the park.
