Liam is sitting in his last period class, History. The teacher is droning on and on about this and that, and why the government screwed up this year and that year. Liam's not listening. He doesn't do much listening in class these days. And even though it's biting him in the butt and his grades are dropping like crazy, he doesn't care. As of now, he has full ride scholarship to a top notch college and he doesn't think he could lose that very easily.

Liam's running is his saving grace, the one thing keeping him sane and involved in the world. Other than cross country he just sits in his room and reads old books from his dad's library.

"Hey Liam, ready for practice tonight?" It's one of the only people Liam actually socializes with, Harry Styles. He's a nice guy, long curly brown hair that he ties up into a bun when he runs. He's pretty damn fast, despite his awkwardly long limbs and clumsy movements. Somehow his limbs just move his body incredibly fast and he breathes through his nose really deep, which always makes Liam smile.

"Yeah, wanna run with me?"

"Sure," Harry smiles, "If I can keep up with you,"

Liam shrugs. Whenever he runs with Harry he can tell that Harry has to push himself incredibly fast to keep up, to the point where he makes these awkward noises and grunts.

When the bell rings and releases the students from the room, Liam walks with Harry to his locker. Harry chats him up about this and that, about districts, which are just around the corner, and about Niall Horan, who Harry has had a crush on since Freshmen year--they're juniors now.

Once they're out of the school they make their way towards the track. Liam has his cross country bag slung over his shoulder, while Harry wears his over his neck paired with a goofy smile. The sun is hot and Liam is sweating before he's even started working out. Harry's sweating too and he grabs his rainbow sweatband from his bag and snaps it around his head. Liam smiles. He looks like such a loser, but there is something about Harry that makes Liam not resent his loser-ness so much. Maybe it's because he's covered in tattoos. Maybe he's too much of a badass to be a loser? Liam makes himself laugh. Harry is far from a badass. Maybe dorky is the best word.

At the track they lace up. Harry pulls off his shirt--he likes to run shirtless--and changes into his shorter than imaginable shorts. Liam leaves his t-shirt on and only changes his shorts which aren't so short.

"We're taking the 7 mile loop today," Harry says as they stretch, "Do you think that I can keep up with you the whole time?"

Liam smiles and jumps into a sprint, "C'mon, Styles. Keep up!"

The run goes through the woods, out the other side, down a back road in the suburbs, and then back through the woods. It's a normal run, nothing out of the ordinary. The woods are alive with squirrels and birds, and there are a few fallen trees left over from a storm a few days ago. It's beautiful. Liam breathes hard, feels Harry right on his heels, his feet hitting the ground and sending vibrations through the forest floor.

Liam suddenly feels as though he's eight again, running with Zayn through the forest, running with their hands together and their breathing in time.

And then Liam is back to reality.

And he feels so angry.

So angry that Zayn was taken away from him.

They were...best friends. So close Liam didn't know how to really breathe without him.

Liam's speed picks up and he tears off through the woods.

"Hey, Liam? C'mon man!" Harry is sprinting to keep up. They are almost to the woods now. It's raining suddenly and Liam looks up to the sky, screaming loud and angry and he continues tearing his way through the woods. Harry yells after him and slowly falls behind. It takes only a few minutes of this until Liam breaks out of the woods and onto the backroad. He turns on the wet and slick black top, running the path down the street.

And that's when Liam sees him.

Zayn.

He's walking on the side of the road. He's different, very different. Taller, lankier, his hair is cut different and his clothes are a little weird, but it's Zayn. He's here. On the road. Just walking.

Zayn hears Liam's footsteps and turns around. Their eyes meet and Zayn takes a step into the road, just as a car round the corner.

The rain is pouring, and Liam can't tell whether the car doesn't see Zayn or whether he can't stop because of the wet street. But either way, the car isn't stopping and Liam's heart is pounding. He feels like he drowning, like he can't breathe.

"Zayn!"

Liam jumps towards his childhood friend. He feel his hands contact with Zayn's body and then nothing.

Darkness.
