CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Dean's P.O.V.
"Baby girl, wake up, it's almost eleven." I whispered softly into April's ear, placing my hand on her shoulder to wake her.
Her eyes fluttered open abruptly, as if I scared her. After a moment, she looked tired again.
I did that weird, 'laugh with your mouth closed' thing. You know, the thing that just sounds like you're letting out a shit ton of air? Yeah, that.
"You're adorable." I said, stopping my laughter.
Now listen, usually, I have to lean into the kiss first, but i shit you not, SHE kissed ME.
I know, astonishing, isn't it?
"SHIT! WE OVER SLEPT!" April yelled right in my ear as loud as she could, then sprinted up and began to throw on clothes.
"April, calm down. By the time we get ready, it will be pointless to even go to school." I said in a calming voice. With this, she let a deep breath out.
"Yeah, you're probably right." She said, looking down at the clothes she had grabbed and the hairbrush she collected from her dresser, debating on what to do with them.
After a moment, she decided to put them on the edge of her bed, then she sat back down.
"So what the hell are we gonna do all day?" She asked, looking up at me.
"Well, if you want, we could start by going out to breakfast?"
~
I know this sounds cheesy, but she's extremely cute when she eats, and I'm not just saying that to be a gentlemen, I mean it.
Her cheekbones grow and shrink in just he right rhythm, and the lighting of her skin changes with it. Almost like you can see every microscopic cell on her face, that glistened in anything that hit it.
Even a full cup of chocolate milk for the little boy in the booth behind us.
Oh yes people, the waitress just dumped a full cup of milk on poor April.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" April screamed at the waitress, her hair dripping wet.
"What's your problem?" I said to the waitress defensively, beginning to wipe April off with the cheap napkins from the container on the table.
"I'm so sorry! It slipped off my tray!" The woman said, shaking at her mistake.
"Yeah, well we're 'slipping' out of here." I said angrily.
I grabbed April's sweatshirt and my jacket, then took her hand in mine and stormed out.
After we drove for a few minutes, I started talking. Spilling the information that I knew would change her outlook on everything.
"It was Lucas, April." I said, slowly.
"Yeah babe, I know, you told me lastnight." She said back, confused. Like she thought I was stupid for repeating myself.
"No, I mean it was him that tried to rape you." I said, taking a short break to check her reaction. But then realizing I had worded it completely wrong. "Well, not him directly, he hired guys to do it. That's why I beat him up April.."
I watched as she stared out the window, a single tear ran down her cheek.
She hadn't said anything and I didn't want to do anything to trigger an emotional break-down, so all I did was rest me hand of hers and hold it as tight as I could without hurting her.
She gave me a quick glance, and smiled. As if to say thank you without words.
For some reason, this got to me. Even though it wasn't important, it hit me hard. It made me feel like someone actually needed me, wanted me, depended on me..
April P.O.V.
I'm beyond shocked. Why would Lucas want to do that. Why would ANYONE want to do that. I did nothing..
"Can we go for a walk?" I asked Dean suddenly.
"Uhm, yeah sure." He paused. "Where?"
"Just head towards our house. I'll show you when it gets close." I told him.
We drove for a few moments, hitting small bumps. Our bodies jostling back and fort like a blade of grass in the wind. Only, not as graceful.
"Do you see that trail over there?" I said softly, pointing my finger to the right of the Smith's house.
"Yeah." He said slowly, observing the opening of the wilderness.
"I used to walk that trail with my dad before he left. When my mom was at work on Saturdays, him, Travis and I used to walk it for a couple hours to kill time. We stopped at a pond out their to watch the fish swim around. There used to be a bunch." I said, reminiscing memories about my childhood and my father. After a long pause, I continued. Remembering I was talking to Dean. "Sometimes we'd even see turtles laying on rocks or branches.. My dad used to say that whenever we saw a turtle in the sun it meant that something good will happen in the future." I paused again. "But every couple of weeks I've seen a turtle in the sun and my dad hasn't came back yet."
"I'm so sorry April.." I said, placing his hand on mine in trust.
"It's okay." I said, gathering myself back together. "Let's go." I said smiling at him.
There was just something about him. Nothing that made him stand out from the others, or nothing he did over the top to make me feel better. But even the slightest thing he says makes me feel so much better about everything. Makes me feel safe..
