Its Friday and we know what that means, yep, she’s actually serious about me spending the week at her place. I have never been so nervous in my life, I told my brothers about the fact I will be sleeping at her place and they all have been making fun of me until today. I mean, its not like I don’t like Asemahle, I do, and we haven’t had sex yet and this is longest I have gone without, bums. First it was because she wanted to see, that I was serious, understandable. I haven’t been the most loyal man. I accept that.
Then it became the timing was never right, literally, I live with 3 brothers, who only leave the house on weekends and on some of the weekends she’s suggested, I would be working, like literally teaching a class, delivering or being James’ right hand man at social conventions.
But for the first time, I actually felt like I didn’t need to have sex with a girl to know she’s either into me or wants me. This is all new to me I can’t lie.
Today I’m driving and I’m playing, ‘Family’ by Ricky Rick and Frank Casino. We are all bopping our heads as we are driving on Soutpansberg street, as we near our school.
“Exe boys ke tlo tloka koloi neh”(I’m gonna need the car) I say.
“Why?” asks Lucas sitting next to me.
“I’m planning on taking madam out to Brooklyn mall” I say.
“Aow, o so dlala le, husband, yerr”(No, you are playing husband now, dammit) says Lucas bumping me.
The others whistle, (Our brother)“Eh, broer warena, spending money on a hun, this is you my boy?” asks Tips behind me.
“Yall making it sound like yall don’t spoil your girls” I say.
“Yeah, but we don’t spend nights at our girl’s places” Mandla adds.
“What do you know about girls?” I ask looking at the rearview.
“Oh so what I’m not supposed to know?” he asks.
“Ja, o sale ngwana”(Yeah, your still a child) I say and he sits back.
I smile, “So can I borrow the car?” I ask.
“Ja, you just need to drop us at home, because you taking the car” says Tips.
I nod.As we pull into the school parking lot, the guys are still giving me a hard time about my plans with Asemahle, but I’m used to their teasing by now. It's all love, even if they enjoy making me the butt of every joke. After all, these are my brothers, my day-ones, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Still, their constant jabs are doing nothing to calm my nerves.
We all hop out of the car, and Lucas slings an arm over my shoulder as we head toward the school gates.
“Listen, my boy, don’t overthink it. Just be yourself. Girls like that—authenticity, you know?” says Lucas.
“Yeah,” Tips chimes in, smirking, “And if she says, your penis is small just remember the story” “Yeah the story is very important” Lucas adds.
“What story?” I ask.
Tips stops me, “You don’t remember, when 5 Pitbulls tried to attack a little girl and you jumped in to save her. And you chased her away saying, ‘run run run I’m gonna fight them all by myself’ and they bite your arm and face”
“Don’t forget about the Tiger that parachuted in and took a chunk of your dick and choked on it and died”
How are they saying this with straight faces? I stop in my tracks, staring at Tips and Lucas, who are both trying their absolute hardest to keep a straight face. Tips even puts his hand on my shoulder, like he’s about to deliver the most heartfelt advice of my life.
“That’s the story you tell her,” Tips says solemnly, “You don’t even need to explain anything else. She’ll be impressed by your bravery and your sacrifice.”Lucas nods vigorously, “Exactly. She’ll forget all about any other concerns and just focus on the fact that you’re basically a hero.”
“Y’all are crazy,” I say, shaking my head as I keep walking toward the school gates, “No one’s believing that nonsense. A tiger that parachuted in? Really?”
Mandla, who’s been quiet up until now, chimes in from behind us, “But imagine if it did happen, though. You’d be a national treasure, broer.”
I can’t help but laugh, despite myself, “Y’all are too much, man. Just let me enjoy my week in peace.”
They laugh, “We’ll see you at break” they say and walk in different directions.
“Hi Don” says a girl voice.
I look around, “Ekse Oleta dingtsang”
Oleta and I used to hook each other up with women, you could say she’s my female gay friend. “Ah ke botsesa wena ntjaka”(I’m asking you my dawg) she says as we are walking down the passage that connects the buildings.
(I’m cool)“Ah ke monate, you know, its just another day” I say.
“Ja, ejoh do you know that girl Kim?” she asks as I text on my phone.
“Ja why?” I ask.
“I need some info” she says.
“Like what?”
“She single? She Bi? What’s going on?”
“She is Bi that I know, but if she’s single, I haven’t talked to her in a while” I say putting my phone in my pocket.
