It had been a quiet morning in the household. Anaya woke up to the soft sunlight filtering through the curtains, the warmth of Maan’s arm wrapped protectively around her. For a fleeting moment, everything felt perfect. She smiled, caressing her growing belly, whispering a soft good morning to her baby.

But as she sat up, a sudden wave of dizziness hit her. The room seemed to tilt, and her vision blurred momentarily. Gripping the edge of the bed for support, she waited for the sensation to pass.

“It’s just the pregnancy,” she murmured to herself, taking a few deep breaths.

Maan stirred beside her, his sleepy voice filled with concern. “Are you okay, love?”

She nodded quickly, forcing a reassuring smile. “Just feeling a little lightheaded. Probably low blood sugar. I’ll be fine after breakfast.”

Maan frowned but didn’t press further. He kissed her forehead before heading to the kitchen to prepare her favorite smoothie.

But the episodes didn’t stop.

Over the next few days, the blackouts became more frequent. Sometimes, it was a fleeting moment of disorientation; other times, she had to sit down quickly to avoid collapsing. Each time, she brushed it off, convincing herself it was just part of being pregnant. After all, wasn’t fatigue and dizziness common during pregnancy?

It wasn’t until she nearly fell while climbing the stairs one evening that Maan’s patience wore thin.

Anaya, this isn’t normal,” he said firmly, catching her just in time. His voice was filled with worry, his hands gripping her shoulders. “We’re going to the doctor. Now.”

“Maan, it’s nothing—”

“It’s not nothing,” he interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. “You’re not just responsible for yourself anymore, Anaya. What if something happens to you or the baby?”

His words struck a chord, and for the first time, Anaya allowed herself to feel the fear that had been bubbling beneath the surface. She nodded reluctantly, letting Maan guide her to the car.

The waiting room felt colder than usual, the sterile smell of antiseptics making her stomach churn. Maan sat beside her, his hand tightly holding hers, his thumb brushing gentle circles over her knuckles.

“Mrs. Anaya Malhotra?” the nurse called.

Maan helped her up, and they followed the nurse into the consultation room. After explaining her symptoms to the obstetrician, the doctor ordered a series of tests, including a scan to rule out any underlying issues.

“It’s probably nothing serious,” the doctor reassured them, but her tone carried a hint of caution. “We just want to be thorough.”

The tests felt like they took an eternity, and by the time they were called back into the doctor’s office, Anaya’s nerves were frayed.

The doctor’s expression was grave, her words careful as she began. “Anaya, the blackouts you’ve been experiencing aren’t related to your pregnancy. The scans have revealed... something unexpected.” She paused, her eyes flicking to Maan before settling back on Anaya.

“You have a brain tumor.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.

Anaya felt the world crumble around her. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. Her hand instinctively went to her belly, as if shielding her baby from the truth.
