Hours later, Sarah returned. Sarah informed them that it didn't work, making JJ let out a loud groan.
"Welp, then that settles it, guys," JJ said, turning to Sarah and John B, "Y'all need to load up in the paddy wagon and get the heck out of dodge right now."
"Right," Pope agreed, "You'll need supplies and you'll have to split as soon as possible."
The group then heard sirens from a distance. They looked towards the direction Sarah came from and saw at least nine police boats speeding toward the island.
John B turned to Sarah, "They followed you here?"
"Does it matter?" Brooklynn asked incredulously, "We have to go!"
Brooklynn's yell shifted the group into gear as they all hurried to pack up their stuff and sling their bags over their shoulders.
Once JJ had his stuff, he reached out a hand to pull Brooklynn up and off of her seat on the log.
"JJ, I'm not gonna be able to keep up with you guys," Brooklynn told him, "You guys have to go without me."
"Hey, not gonna happen," JJ forced her up, "Just like I told you at the Crain house, I got you."
The group began to run across the island, away from the police boats. Regularly, JJ was the fastest runner and led the group, but he stayed behind to help Brooklynn.
John B and Sarah were barely ahead the couple as Kiara and Pope led them towards the end of the island.
Sarah's arm was slung over John B's shoulder as he practically dragged her behind Pope and Kiara. Brooklynn winced after each step she took, trying her hardest to keep up with the Pogues in front of her. Brooklynn refused to let her friends get captured because of her.
"You got this, Sarah! Go!" Brooklynn encouraged the blonde in front of her as Pope screamed for the group behind him to hurry up.
"Brook, you good?" Kiara yelled back to her as they pushed through some very tall grass.
"Yes, just keep going!" Brooklynn answered.
At the end of the lap of grass, was a fairly shallow body of water. Kiara and Pope ran through with barely any difficulty. John B and JJ helped their girls through the water.
Usually, Brooklynn was a phenomenal swimmer and always kept lengths in front of her friends, but her bullet wound tremendously slowed her down.
Brooklynn was making it okay until they had to step out of the water and back onto land. She let out a whine as she felt her stitches rip open.
Kiara, John B and Sarah turned to look back at her but Brooklynn gestured for them to keep running.
"Do you need me to carry you?" JJ stopped to ask, keeping his hands on her hips to stay balanced.
"No, I'm fine," Brooklynn quickly shook her head, "Keep going."
JJ nodded and took her hand, pulling her along with him. Once they were out of the water, Kiara pulled the group to hide behind a tree. She knew Brooklynn and Sarah would be unable to make it much further.
Kiara watched as blood seeped through the bandage on Brooklynn's leg. Kiara cringed as she pulled Brooklynn into a hug, sinking to sit on the ground together.
Sarah leaned onto the tree, clutching the wound on her side and panting. John B, JJ and Pope all shared looks with eachother, unsure what to do.
"What do we do?" Pope asked desperately.
"There's no getting out of this," JJ informed them, "We have to make a stand."
Brooklynn moved her head away from Kiara's shoulder and looked up to see JJ pull the gun out of his backpack and begin drying it off with John B's bandana.
"Absolutely not. No. We're not doing that, JJ," Brooklynn told him, pulling herself up and leaning her weight on the tree.
The police officer's yells were moving closer and closer to them, JJ being the only one with a plan.
JJ ignored Brooklynn and rapidly continued to dry off the gun. Brooklynn physically couldn't do anything to stop him so she desperately turned to John B.
John B nodded, seeing his pink-haired best friend's glossy eyes. He stood in front of JJ and removed the gun from his palm.
John B dropped the gun onto the ground and quickly covered it with leaves that had fallen off the tree.
"It's gonna be alright," John B told JJ, forcing a comforting smile onto his face.
At least twenty police officers had caught up with the Pogues. John B raised his hands and pulled away from his friend group, "Here we go."
Sheriff Shoupe and several other familiar Kildare County officers raised their guns toward John B, which Brooklynn believed to be entirely unnecessary.
"Hands up, John B!" Shoupe yelled to him, although his hands were already raised.
"Don't move!" Deputy Plumb shouted as John B moved closer.
"Listen, Shoupe," John B requested, "I wanna testify."
"It's about damn time," Shoupe scoffed.
Deputy Thomas rushed over to John B and forcefully took him in his arms, throwing him down onto the ground.
"Are you serious? Come on!" JJ yelled in anger.
"He didn't do anything!" Brooklynn added to JJ's protest.
Thomas dropped down on his knees next to John B and began throwing punches despite Shoupe's orders to stop.
Everyone began yelling at Thomas. Brooklynn let out a sob as she saw blood begin to pour out of John B's nose. She tucked her head into Kiara's shoulder, refusing to watch any longer. Kiara squeezed her arms around the girl and continued to shout at Thomas.
"Sheriff, what is that?" JJ asked Shoupe, gesturing to the scene in front of them, "You're just gonna let that happen?"
"Don't move," Plumb warned JJ, pushing her gun towards his face.
Deputy Thomas then stood up and picked John B up by the collar so they were face-to-face.
"This is for Peterkin," Thomas told John B as he swung his fist into John B's face, knocking him unconscious.
