“Shit, shit, shit, I am late”. I grabbed my tote bag. “Bye aunty” I wave my Aunt a goodbye. I hope I made it before Emma arrived. She texted me last night that she had something to discuss with me.
But my life won't be that easy right? Of course the traffic has to enter into the picture to make my day even worse. I was behind time and now that I am stuck in the middle of the road surrounded by the sound of the horns. I checked the time. I was late.
“Hey” I greeted Emma the moment I arrived. “Hey, Jane. Why so late today?” She sounds cool. Thank God she's in a good mood or else I would have already gone back home now.
“Umm… You know how traffic is?” I start to rearrange the stack. I hope she doesn't see my dark circles.
Emma came up beside me “Turn your face here”. I did what she told me to. She examined my face. “No wonder you're late”. She said,
“Right? You also agreed about it” I was still talking about the traffic. “Jane, you clearly slept late last night, didn't you?. She asked.
I looked at her with a surprised expression. How does she know? “Jane, don't tell me you were reading all night till the enemy turned into a lover” she said. She wasn't wrong as it was my habit when I read the Enemy to lover trope. I won't let the book down until they kiss or do something that calms my curiosity. But this time Emma was wrong.
As Emma's gaze lingered on me, I felt my heart racing. What if it sees right through me? I shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact. Please, just let someone walk in, I thought, scanning the empty shop. A distraction, any distraction would be welcome right now. Just as Emma opened her mouth to press further, the doorbell above the entrance jingled, signaling the arrival of a new customer.
“Ah, excuse me,” Emma said. Her expression softened. “Welcome to Sunshine Bookshop! How can I help you?” I breathed a silent sigh of relief as Emma turned to assist the customer.
That was a closed encounter. Thankfully She didn't ask me again.
I glanced at the wall clock, noting the time. “12:20,” I murmured to myself. I quickly finished restocking the shelves and tidied up my workplace.
“Excuse me, Emma” I said, approaching my manager. “I am heading home for my online class.
Emma nodded, smiling. “ Okay, Jane. Have a great class! By the way, about my text from last night's text. I wanted to tell you about our upcoming event.”
My curiosity came up in no time. “ What event?”
“We're hosting the book launch of Mrs Wendy Quinns's new novel”. Emma announced, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
