The car rolled to a stop exactly where I had asked—just far enough from home. Close, but not too close.

I tightened my grip on the bag of snacks, turning to Raj. "Thanks for the ride." My voice was steady, careful.

He didn’t answer right away. His eyes flicked to the road ahead, then back to me. "Sure," he said, his tone unreadable. "See you around, Moon."

I ignored the way my chest tightened at the nickname and stepped out. The air outside was lighter—maybe because I wasn’t sitting beside someone who, for reasons I didn’t want to admit, made my heart race. I inhaled deeply, adjusting the bag in my hand as I walked the short distance home.

This wasn’t about being ashamed of Raj. I barely even knew him. But Dane would never understand. His teammate. The Casanova. A guy with a reputation that didn’t match the one who had just bought me my favorite snacks without me even asking.

I pushed the thought aside as I stepped inside.

"Back already?" My aunt’s voice reached me before I could escape to my room. I turned to see her standing by the kitchen counter, eyes narrowing at the bag in my hand. "What’s that?"

"Snacks," I said casually, setting them down on the table.

Her brow lifted. "Since when do you buy all your favorites at once?"

I exhaled slowly, keeping my expression neutral. "I was craving them."

A pause. Then, with a small hum, she turned back to what she was doing.

I grabbed one of the packs and headed to my room. Sitting on the edge of my bed, I stared at the unopened packet in my hands. It shouldn't matter that Raj had bought them. It shouldn’t matter that he remembered the little things I liked.

  But it did.

  And that was dangerous.

I had barely settled onto my bed when my phone buzzed beside me.

Raj: “Did you reach home safely?”

I stared at the message, my fingers hesitating over the keyboard. He didn’t need to check in. He didn’t owe me anything. But he still did.

I typed out a simple "Yeah." No emojis, no extra words. Keeping it short felt safer.

A few seconds later, the typing bubble appeared. Then it vanished. Then it came back.

  Raj: “Good.”

That was it. Just one word.

I should have put my phone away, ignored the way my heart reacted to something so small. But instead, my thumb hovered over the screen, debating whether to say something back.
