The sound of muffled, constant, pleasant chatter, and the occasional grinding of chairs against concrete, drizzled through the crack under the door. It contrasted with the nervous silence inside the room. The only things chattering were the multitude of thoughts in my being, making my head buzz. But I was grinding my teeth like there was no tomorrow.
As I looked at the girl it the mirror opposite me, her expression looked thoroughly shocked, and not joyous, as I had had expected it to be. Her floor-length, pure white gown was something I would not have usually liked, but it did look rather nice. It had a high neckline, laced long sleeves, and lace covering a large scoop in the back. Her hair was in a braided half-bun, and it shone brilliantly red. This girl looked vaguely familiar, like a distant cousin that you know you've met before. Except--no. This girl was me.
And I was ecstatic that I was marrying the person I loved so much, but it was so surreal. Marriage was an occasion I had thought for the future, but it was happening now. Now. I shook myself, took a few deep breaths, and smiled. I peeked outside. Everything was perfect.
A head poked its way into the room.
"Hey, Lil! You ready?" I turned, and nodded, grinning with nervous-excitement. Marlene's familiar playful smile answered mine. She was fully prepared in her peach dress, which swung around her ankles as she came over to give me a hug.
"You're so pretty Lily!" Another head poked through the door. Mary. I smiled. I really need her calmness right now, I thought, grateful for her arrival. She gave me an encouraging smile, and I motioned for her to join our group hug. After a couple minutes of Marlene's jokes to ease my nerves, which definitely did their job, the jokester led me to the door. I don't actually remember walking out of the door, but after my eyes recovered from their temporary blindness caused by the bright sunlight, Marlene and Mary had left my side. I looked up and did a double-take. Everyone's eyes were on me. I smiled, hoping in the name of all Merlin's most prized possessions, that I wouldn't do something stupid, like trip on my train (which Mum insisted I have), or forget my vows.
As it turns out, I was less of a klutz than I thought, and had a better memory too. I managed to not trip over anything, nor mess up my words. It was so blissful so peaceful, yet so exciting and new. And despite the multitude of people surrounding us, my mind registered only James and I. With the marrying almost completed, a wide smile took over my features as James looked into my eyes and said, "Always".
